| Icelandic people tell UK UP YOURS over banking compensation (10Apr11) Duration : 159 Seconds In a deal the Icelandic, UK and Dutch governments had struck and thought would get voted through, the people of Iceland voted in a referendum to not pay back the UK and Netherlands the money they lost in the Icelandic bank collapse. Good for the people of Iceland for telling the UK and Dutch UP YOURS ! Start from asking why was this money deposited in such abnormally high interest accounts, who was laundering money, why were UK local councils putting money into such ventures DESPITE warnings that the offer was too good to be true. If the UK wants money back, let's start by getting 100's billion from the crooked Scottish banks in the UK, and one northern bank in England, who defrauded the UK taxpayer of hundreds of billions of pounds. They were only bailed out because they were in Labour heartlands, and that would hurt Labour votes at the then coming general election. Recorded from Channel 4 News, 10 April 2011. | | Iceland spurns Chinese investor in land deal Duration : 73 Seconds www.nma.tv Iceland's economy boomed in the run-up to the global financial crisis that started in 2008. Like the Vikings of yore, Icelandic banks carried off the riches from their neighboring countries. Instead of pillaging, they merely offered high-interest bank accounts. But once the crisis hit, Iceland's banking sector collapsed, plunging the whole country into dire financial crisis. This is where Chinese businessman Huang Nubo stepped in. Huang was on track to buy a 300 square kilometer parcel of land, that's 0.3 percent the total size of Iceland. He had a vision of developing the land into a luxury resort. But Iceland's government blocked the deal. Some suspect that the Chinese government was behind the purchase somehow and had some nefarious plans. Huang cried foul, saying that the deal was nixed because of anti-Chinese sentiments and that the west is being hypocritical by calling for China to open up its markets while hampering Chinese investment in their own. Is the rest of the world truly happy to see China as an emerging power? Whatever the case may be, Chinese buyers are going on a shopping spree around the world as the Great Recession causes asset prices to drop in various European and American countries. | | How Iceland Defeated Bankers Duration : 77 Seconds How Icelandic Government Defeated The Bankers Iceland Kicks Out Bankers Iceland is free. And it will remain so, so long as her people wish to remain autonomous of the foreign domination of her would-be masters — in this case, International bankers. On April 9, the fiercely independent people of island-nation defeated a referendum that would have bailed out the UK and the Netherlands who had covered the deposits of British and Dutch investors who had lost funds in Icesave bank in 2008. At the time of the bank's failure, Iceland refused to cover the losses. But the UK and Netherlands nonetheless have demanded that Iceland repay them for the "loan" as a condition for admission into the European Union. In response, the Icelandic people have told Europe to go pound sand. The final vote was 103207 to 69462, or 58.9 percent to 39.7 percent. "Taxpayers should not be responsible for paying the debts of a private institution," said Sigriur Andersen, a spokeswoman for the Advice group that opposed the bailout. A similar referendum in 2009 on the issue, although with harsher terms, found 93.2 percent of the Icelandic electorate rejecting a proposal to guarantee the deposits of foreign investors who had funds in the Icelandic bank. The referendum was invoked when President Olafur Ragnur Grimmson vetoed legislation the Althingi, Iceland's parliament, had passed to pay back the British and Dutch. Under the terms of the agreement, Iceland would have had to pay £2.35 billion to the UK ... | | Iceland's New Bank Disaster Duration : 275 Seconds This is not how economic democracy was expected to work during the 19th-century drive for Parliamentary reform. And by the early 20th century, social democratic and labor parties were supposed to take the lead in moving banking and credit along with other basic infrastructure into the public domain. But today, from Greece to Iceland, governments are acting as enforcers or even as collection agents on behalf of the financial sector -- as the Occupy Wall Street movement expresses it, the top "1%," not the bottom 99%. Iceland stands as a dress rehearsal for this power grab. The IMF and Iceland's government held a conference in Reykjavik on October 27 to celebrate the ostensible success in their reconstruction of Iceland's economy and banking system. ----------- OF NOTE: In the United States, the crisis that Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel celebrated as "too good to let go to waste" will be capped by scaling back Social Security and Medicare as soon as the autumn Doomsday Clock runs down and the Congressional Super-Committee of 12 (with President Obama holding the 13th vote in case of a tie) gets to agree to make the working population pay Wall Street for its bad loans. ------------- The Greek austerity plan thus serves as a dress rehearsal for the US -- with the Democratic Party playing the role as counterparts to Greece's Socialist Party that is sponsoring austerity, and expelling labor union leaders from its ranks if they object to the grand double-cross ... | | Hook Line and Sunk - Iceland Duration : 1445 Seconds September 2009 Dubbed the 'New Vikings', Iceland's bankers had taken the world by storm. But a year ago their banks collapsed overnight, leaving the country to face economic chaos. Have the lessons been learnt? Like thousands of once-prosperous Icelanders, Gunnar is concerned about his future: Im going to lose my flat. Im going to get bankrupt. All because of the way things were handled here. Turning a blind eye, the government let banks grow ten times the size of the countrys GDP. Very little profits were made from actual banking. Banks only grew by spending other peoples money, especially that of the British. Its one of the greatest Ponzi schemes in history. Says this independent MP. Now Britain wants it all back, leaving Icelanders with a huge debt. With the financial world keen to move on, economists warn of the business-as-usual mentality: If we don't make some quite serious structural changes we are just setting the conditions for a repeat crisis.
