Last weekend, over 110 skaters from more than 21 different nationalities met up in Prague to compete for the 2010 Euro WITP Champs. (Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Czech, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy and Greece!) They all qualified in one of their area's Wild In The Parks contest that Volcom has been organizing for seven years now throughout Europe. To make it easier for everyone to travel, the accommodation is free for all contestants, and every year a new European city is picked. Result is: Volcom gives the opportunity to plenty of kids to compete in an international event, hang out, meet new friends, see what's up in the other countries and for some it is their first "skate trip" in a foreign country. Director: Tony Gatlif Writer: Tony Gatlif Latcho Drom (rom for "safe journey") describes the travels, singing and dancing of 'Gypsy' groups from Rajahstan (India), Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France, and Spain. Some scenes are acted, but there is no dialogue or narration--only partial translation of some songs. The film illustrates the variety of conditions in which the 'Gypsy' people live--earthbound nomads in the hot deserts of Asia, ironsmiths and abjectly poor tree-dwellers in the frozen plains of Eastern Europe, and craftspeople and traders in the hills and seasides of north Africa and western Europe. It also illustrates the similarities in travel habits, musical tones (spoons, open drums, and string-based rhythms) and song themes (celebration of travel and perceived rejection by sedentary locals).
