Németh Miklós 89 Határokon át 1 Documentary on how a renegade band of illegal immigrants and a few visionary leaders in Hungarian society conspired with Gorbachev to bring down the Berlin Wall in 1989. The Nemeth government took power on Nov 26th 1988 and immediately started the transition of Hungarian society to a pluralistic market economy and democracy. On March 10ht 1989 the foreign minister Gyula Horn signed the treaty with his soviet counterpart Shevardnadze for the withdrawal of soviet troops and got verbal assurances from Gorbachev that he has the freedom to act in accordance to Hungary's national sovereignty as far as Hungary's internal affairs were concerned, and soviet troops will not interfere. On August 19th 700 east German citizens were allowed to cross the border into Austria, an event coordinated with border guards and political leaders on both sides of the border. This event marked the beginning of a steady stream of "illegal" defections from East Germany to West Germany via Hungary and Austria. This video was made by yours truly on the occasion of the 50th year commemoration on Oct 23, 2006, of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. It was put on by the Hungarian Society of Victoria with a climactic evening concert held at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Brahms' Hungarian Dance No.5 is the first piece that was performed by the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, conducted by János Sándor. The Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra was founded in 1986 by a distinguished British musician. It has thrived for the last 22 years, introducing young people to the master works of the symphonic repertoire. Maestro János Sándor, its conductor that evening, graduated with distinction from the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary. He has conducted Hungary's top symphony orchestras and appeared as a guest conductor in over twenty countries, made more than 30 recordings, and is the holder of two awards of merit from Hungary. He is also an honorary life member of the European Philharmonic Orchestra. Enjoy!

sturly.com The Black Hand, officially Unification or Death, was a secret society founded in the Kingdom of Serbia on June 10, 1910. It was a part of the Pan-Slavist movement, with the intention of uniting all of the territories containing South Slav populations annexed by Austria-Hungary. The Black Hand's connections to the June 28, 1914 assassination in Sarajevo of Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria is considered to have been the main catalyst to the start of World War I. Just prior to World War I, under the orders of the Chief of Serbian Military Intelligence, Serbian Military Officers and remnants of the Black Hand organized and facilitated the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria on occasion of his visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia. The Austro-Hungarian investigation of the assassination rounded up all but one of the assassins and also much of the underground railroad that had been used to transport the assassins and their weapons from Serbia to Sarajevo.
