Heres a virtual movie of the Hungarian poet György Petri virtualy reading in English his dark malevolent "Night Song of the Personal Shadow" This bitter little poem gives a voice to one of the numerous government agents who were set to follow and spy on him in Hungary whilst it was still under the censorship of the communist iron curtain:. Gyorgy Petri (1943 -- 2000) was the leading Hungarian poet of his generation. Educated at the Lornd Eotvos University in literature and philosophy, he was strongly influenced as well (as were most Eastern European intellectuals) by the Czechoslovakian "Prague Spring" of 1968, the attempt to reform Communism into a more legitimate workers' state, as well as the crushing of that intention by the Soviet military backed by other Warsaw Pact countries in August of that year. Consequently, his work reveals a great deal of cynicism, bitterness, and harsh irony. Although his early work was published by state-controlled publishers in the early 70's, when they wanted to heavily censor his work beginning with his third collection, he refused to allow its publication through those publishers and turned to underground samizdat publication instead, risking state censure and worse. Finally, after the fall of Communism at the end of the 1980's, he could publish his work openly, and he became enormously popular, winning a number of prestigious literary awards during the 1990's, as well as travelling abroad. Jan. 1, 1823, enriched the artistry and extended the range of his nation's poetry beyond any predecessor and created a new synthesis of poetic techniques and realistic subjects. His epics were powerful blends of folk topics, attitudes, and verse forms, and his lyric poems stood out as aesthetic expressions of genuinely felt human experiences. They celebrated nature, the joys and sorrows of common folk, married love, family life, and patriotism. His language, images, folklore, and characters were rooted in the Hungarian Great Plains. He participated in Hungary's War of Independence (1848-49) and disappeared on July 31, 1849, in a battle against Russian forces. He was probably buried in a mass grave.

"Himnusz" (in English: Hymn) a song beginning with the words Isten, áldd meg a magyart About this sound listen (help·info) (God, bless the Hungarians) is a musical poetic prayer that serves as the official national anthem of Hungary. It was adopted in 1844 and the first stanza is sung at official ceremonies. The words were written by Ferenc Kölcsey, a nationally renowned poet in 1823, and its currently official musical setting was composed by the romantic composer Ferenc Erkel, although other less-known musical versions exist. The poem bore the subtitle "A magyar nép zivataros századaiból" ("From the rough centuries of the Hungarian people"); it is often argued that this subtitle by emphasizing past rather than contemporary national troubles was added expressly to enable the poem to pass Habsburg censorship. The full meaning of the poem's text is evident only to those well acquainted with Hungarian history. written by Petőfi Sándor: Falu végén kurta kocsma Szatmár, 1847. (augusztus) Petőfi Sándor (1823-1849) Sándor - Alexander - Petöfi (his proper name was Petrovics - pron. Petrovitch) is perhaps Hungary´s most famous poet. Born on 1.1. 1823 in Kiskörös (Kiskunhalas), he died as a soldier during the revolution against the kuk-empire of Vienna the last day of july 1849 in Schäßburg/Segesvár/Sighisoara (now Romania). Son of a butcher, he left highschool and his family to become an actor, joining a theatre troupe and wandering across the country. In 1839 he became a soldier, then in 1841 he took up again his unsteady life as a roving actor. After his first booklet with poems having been published he got a job as an assistent editor in Pest. His poetry soon had its proper tone, as he used the language of the people, thus affec- ting the political intentions to abolish latin still being the official language of poli- tics and administration in Hungary. His work also was a contribution to give a break-through to a poetry close to the people in those days literature, initiating the beginning of a new epoch of poetic style. The highly patriotic impetus of his lyric was not regarded with benevolence by the authorities but nevertheless loved by the hungarian people. For the first time in hungarian poetry Petöfi´s lyrics deal with personal feelings, always being dominated by a subjective note, thus breaking up the poetical conventions of his time. 2002 augusztus 24-én a Los Angelesi Magyar Házban került bemutatásra a Los Angelesi Arany János Kultúr Kör (alakult 1974-ben, elnöke Előd László) rendezésében Verbászi Betty előadóművésznő egyszemélyes előadói estje. A műsortervet Betty választotta ki, a gitár számokat ő szerezte. A magyar irodalom és költészet e gyöngyszemeinek az ujra bemutatása 10 év archivumi porosodás után remélem nézőink számára öröm lesz. Ez a felvétel még a High Definició előtti időkben készült, ebből adódóan minősége archivumi. Bettyről illik tudni, hogy a délvidék szülötteként a magyar versmondó művészetben ott kezde el aratni előadói sikereit. Hogy az elszakított területeken is születtek, nevelkedtek fiatalok a magyar nyelv tudásának ezen a színtjén, az egy mennybéli csoda. Köszönet érette.

The Gloomy Sunday we know today is based on the lyrics of Hungarian poet László Jávor. The original Hungarian Composer and pianist, Rezso Seress, had his own lyrics that were replaced early on. The version most people are familiar with today is not based on the composers original lyrics! It'll be nice to one day get someone to sing his original lyrics over his haunting melody!
