| | The Masters of Drum (Sziget festival,Budapest,Hungary 2011) Duration : 16 Seconds The Sziget Festival is one of the largest music and cultural festivals in Europe. The festival is held annually in August in Budapest, Hungary and takes place on Óbudai-sziget ("Old-Buda Island"), a leafy island of 108 hectares (266 acres) on the Danube, thus Sziget stands for Island. Currently it boasts more than 1000 performances each year. The week-long festival has grown from a relatively low-profile 1993 student event to become one of the definitive European rock festivals by the late 1990s, with about half of all visitors coming from outside Hungary, including the UK and France (11 000 French visitors in 2007). It also boasts a dedicated "party train" service (with resident DJ's) that transports festivalgoers from Western Europe. The second event (1994), labeled Eurowoodstock, was headlined by performers from the original festival 25 years after. In 1997, Sziget attendancy rates surpassed the 250 000 mark, and in 2001, the 350 000 mark. The all-time peak year was 2009 with 390 000 visitors. It is now being increasingly labeled as a European alternative to the Burning Man festival due to its unique features ("an electronically amplified, warped amusement park that has nothing to do with reality"). In 2002, Sziget branched out to Transylvania when its organizers co-created a new annual festival there titled Félsziget Fesztivál (Romanian: Peninsula Festival) that soon became the largest of its kind in Romania. In 2007, the organizers created Balaton Sound, an ... | | US Embassy Budapest at Sziget Festival, 2009 August Duration : 131 Seconds As part of its youth outreach program, the US Embassy in Budapest set up a tent at one of the largest youth festivals in Europe, the Sziget Festival, which drew a record 390000 visitors over its five-day run, August 12-16. The Embassy tent was on the path between several of the main music stages, so thousands of Hungarians and youths from other countries visited the tent. The aim of the Budapest Embassys program was to involve young people in entertaining games, yet provide them with the opportunity to get information about the United States as well as studying there. The main theme of this years festival was the 20th anniversary of the change of the regime in Hungary and the Fall of the Berlin Wall that marked the end of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. To commemorate this significant event, the Embassys tent also tried to highlight this theme in many of its activities. The most popular activity proved to be a photo opportunity with a President Obama cut-out. Chargé dAffaires Jeffrey Levine worked at the Embassy tent on Wednesday, August 12, where he held conversations with tent visitors and listened to their views about the United States. He awarded a certificate and an I-Pod to the most promising drummer, the winner of the Embassys Rock Band video game competition. Representatives of the Hungarian-American Fulbright Commission, IIE and HAESF answered visitors questions about study opportunities in the United States and how to get through the application process ... | | ICWIP 2010: International Culture Week in Pécs/Hungary Duration : 43 Seconds The official ICWIP 2010 video: www.vimeo.com The International Culture Week in Pécs (ICWiP) is one of the most popular annual youth cultural festivals organized in the City Pécs, Hungary. Its programme combines a summer school, different cultural and sport activities, and an inspiring festival with concerts, danceshows, and exhibitions. The theme of ICWiP2010 is Balkans: Re-loaded, which stems from the concept of the original European Capital of Culture application of the city of Pécs. The geopolitical area of the Balkans is unique and at the same time very multicultural. In 2010 Pécs may become the first European Capital of Culture to open a gateway to the rich multiculturalism of the Balkans, including its Islamic heritage. During the conference and festival we will be discussing what a "Balkans identity" is or whether it even exists. How does today's youth reflect the national identities in relation to a possible "Balkans identity"? How does the youth view the future of the area? The formation process of the Balkan nations is important from the viewpoint of democracy. Keeping this in mind we have invited lecturers also from other counties and continents to share their views and experiences on the democracy development in practice. | | Babam - Vidd el Duration : 391 Seconds A Vidd el c. szám a zenekar 2010-es demójáról. October 2007 saw Babam's first ever public performance at the a38 ship on the banks of the Danube. Of Babam's original 8 members, 4, including the band's lead vocalist and song writer Julia Kasa (of Anima sound system fame), originated from the experimental jazz outfit Koala Fusion. During these formative years the band also consisted of two backing singers and a guitarist. During those years the band was seen playing at the most infamous of Hungary's venues and festivals, including Godor and Sziget Festival. Kasa's songs combine a mix of soul, new jazz and dub step, with a genuine Hungarian folk influence. At the end of 2009 Kasa reformed the band. They have since won awards at Fete de la Musique (aka World Music Day), PANKKK (a state-sponsored music organization), and a Fringe prize in the Capital of Culture for 2010, Pecs. Following their award at Fete de la Musique, Babam will represent Hungary in Warsaw at the event. Their first album is scheduled for the beginning of 2011.
