Most of the prisoners who died had never been charged, let alone convicted. Honduras is plagued with judicial corruption, rampant drug trafficking, and the highest murder rate in the world, which critics say has all worsened since the 2009 coup that overthrew Manuel Zelaya. We're joined by Dana Frank, professor of history at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Honduras correspondent for The Nation magazine. "This was not a natural disaster," Frank says. "There were two previous prison fires like this in 2003 and 2004 [and] reports saying that this should have been cleaned up a long time ago." Hondurans are tightening their belts even more than before. With an economy that is shrinking by three percent a year, and deepening political turmoil since President Manuel Zelaya's expulsion in a June coup, many are looking to Sunday's presidential election to bring relief. Maximo Padillo sells vegetables at a market in Tegucigalpa. He says that business has slowed since Zelaya's forced departure in June. [Maximo Padillo, Vegetable Stall Owner]: "We had good customers who bought a lot of produce and now they are buying very little. They tell us it's due to lack of funds. There are no jobs and they have fired a lot of people from their jobs. People are quite worried." Foreign investment plunged 42 percent in the first half of the year and analysts say it is likely to fall further as investors shun the lingering political uncertainty. Tourists are also staying away, particularly US visitors dissuaded by a State Department travel warning. Economic analyst Manuel de Jesus Bautista says this spells more economic woes. [Manuel de Jesus Bautista, Economic Analyst]: "Tourism will lose out on about 100 million dollars this year, which obviously for our economy is a serious problem." Ousted president Zelaya has urged his supporters not to vote on November 29th, but many Hondurans simply want to move on.

Belize "Father of the Country" George Cadle Price Passes George Cadle Price, who led Belize to independence and who served as the country's first Prime Minister, died this morning in Belize City at age 92, just two days shy of the 30th anniversary of Belize's independence. He had undergone surgery at a Belize City hospital following a fall. George Price entered British Honduras politics in the 1940s, helping found the People's United Party and beginning in the 1950s served as PUP party leader. He also was elected mayor of Belize City in 1956. In the 1960s and 1970s, Price led the effort to achieve independence for the British colony, serving as the colony's Premier and First Minister. When Belize became independent in 1981, George Price became its first Prime Minister, serving until 1984. He held the position again from 1989 to 1993. He retired as PUP party leader in 1996. Of both Creole and Mestizo background, George Price attended St. John's College, a prominent Jesuit-run secondary school in Belize City. Never married, he was known as an ascetic, dedicated political leader who had little interest in worldly possessions or monetary gain. Religious and a populist, he believed in Belize for Belizeans and often opposed tourism development because he did not want Belize to "become a nation of waiters."

Dozens of prisoners died trapped in their cells and were burned beyond recognition. Comayagua firefighters' spokesman Josue Garcia said there were "hellish" scenes at the prison and that desperate inmates had rioted in a bid to escape the flames. "We couldn't get them out because we didn't have the keys and couldn't find the guards who had them," he said. One prisoner, who managed to escape, later told reporters that he first had heard "the screams of the ones (inmates) on fire and everyone just started fearing for their lives". "The only thing that we were able to do was start breaking the roof apart so we could go out from above. We started ripping apart the ceiling above us." Lucy Marder, who heads the forensic services in Comayagua, said that 356 people on the prison roster were unaccounted for.
