The most realistic flight Simulator EVER bit.ly Probe of Fatal TACA Crash Underway A TACA Airbus A320-233 (El-TAF) skidded off a rain-soaked runway at Tegucigalpa-Toncontin Airport (TGU) in Honduras on May 30, veered onto a road, smashing into cars and a building. TACA Flight 390, a regular flight from San Salvadors Comalapa International Airport (SAL), El Salvador to Miami International with an intermediate stop at Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, ended with the jetliner broken in three parts. A pilot, two passengers and two occupants of a car were killed. At least 80 others were injured among those aboard the A320, including 124 passengers, two pilots, four flight attendants and five crewmembers who were being repositioned. The jetliner landed amid high winds and low visibility. The approach to the aging Honduran airport is difficult even in clear weather. The A320 exited Runway 02/20 (6112 x 148 feet). The morning of the accident, Tropical Storm Alma had buffeted Nicaraguas Pacific coast before its remnant headed inland over southern Honduras. The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched a team of investigators to assist the governments of Honduras and El Salvador in their investigation of the fatal runway overrun. This afternoon (Sept.21, 2009) I joined an ad-hoc CAR-CARAVAN in La Ceiba (Honduras), to CELEBRATE the long awaited RETURN of the ELECTED PRESIDENT MEL ZELAYA to Honduras. We started with about 50 cars at 4pm at the ''Francisco Morazan'' school, home of the RESISTANCE MOVEMENT in La Ceiba. This was about the time the curfew officially started. MANY CARS JOINTED along the way. My estimation is that there were ABOUT 200 CARS in total. There was NO POLICE INTERFERENCE except on one crossing where they stopped other traffic to let us continue our ride! In another case we saw that that police spotted my camera and turned away their heads, not to be recognized. I also noticed a police car that was weaving along the route, via parallel streets, probably to keep an eye on the manifestation. There was NO MILITARY anywhere to be seen. The caravan caused MAJOR TRAFFIC JAMS. We first circled in the center, then a larger circle and after dark we went to the outer areas. There won't be many people in La Ceiba who haven't noticed the caravan. Many people aside the road were supporting us. Some stopped cars and jumped in the back. Our car was fully-loaded, about 10 people. People we singing and shouting "!!Se oye, se siente !! Mel esta presente'' !!! We heard it!! !! We feel it!! Mel is present!! urge mel!!" etc. As the video shows, many MIDDLE-CLASS people were in the caravan (that is, people with nice middle class cars). Professor Sperling will examine alternative fuel failures and successes, shrinking price elasticity of demand for gasoline, the evolving transportation monoculture, the advent of hybrids and other advanced technologies, and recent shifts in vehicle mix within the context of California and US public policy. A strategy will be suggested for directing the triad of industry, government, and consumers toward a low-carbon transportation system. Biography Daniel Sperling is Professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science and Policy, founding Director of the Institute of Transportation Studies, interim Director of the Energy Efficiency Center at UC Davis (ITS-Davis). In February 2007, Governor Schwarzenegger appointed Dr. Sperling to the "automotive" seat on the California Air Resources Board. He is author or editor of 200 papers and reports and 11 books (including Two Billion Cars, Oxford University Press), has served on 11 National Academies committees and was selected as a National Associate of the National Academies, and chairs the Future of Mobility committee of the (Davos) World Economic Forum.
