Touring Ancient Copán (1948)
Duration : 550 Seconds

An early tour of the ancient Mayan city of Copán soon after being restored by the Honduran government, the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and local Copanecos. The restoration work included the redirecting the Copán River and began just as the area was recovering from a severe earthquake in December 1934. Most interesting is a brief glimpse into the nearby town of Copán - a grass-covered central park, the church, and an ornate fountain built by the Carnegie staff. While the church and fountain remain much as they were, the grass has disappeared under stone and pavement. Many Copanecos recall that in the past, or "antes" as they would say, the parque central was once dominated by the shade of a tall Ceiba tree under which the town market operated until it was moved indoors in the 1950s. Evidently, the fountain/pila stands where the tree once did, or rather, the tree may have been cut down to make room for the fountain Carnegie built. Opinions differ. A visit to the border town of Copán, Honduras at the turn of the nineteenth century. Many of these photos were taken by archaeologists from the Peabody Museum, Harvard University, who excavated the Mayan site of Copán from the 1890s through the late 1940s. Others were taken by Dr. Atilio Peccorini, a diplomat from El Salvador, who visited the area in 1917 and occasionally lectured on the subject of ancient American civilizations. Coba archaeological site
Duration : 342 Seconds

Coba archaeological site: Coba is an ancient Mayan city in the state of Quintana Roo, located 172 km from Cancun, and about 90km from Chichen Itza. Enveloped in the deep green of the tropical jungle, this ancient Mayan city rises up between two lagoons. In its era of splendour the site extended over 75 sq. km. History of Coba During its history, Coba had more than 50000 inhabitants, and was as important as Tikal in Guatemala, with which it maintained tight cultural ties. Coba exercised economic control over the region through a complex network of elevated stone and plaster roads, known in Maya as sacbe, radiating from the center of Coba to many other Mayan cities. The longest of these ran over 100km and led to the city of Yaxuna. Coba traded extensively with other Mayan communities, particularly the ones further south along the Caribbean coast in what is now Belize and Honduras. It utilized the ports of Xcaret, Xel-Há, Tancah, and Tulum. Mayan Archaeology in Coba Coba remained an important site in the Post-Classic era. The Mayan archaeology in Coba is truly inspiring. New temples were built and old ones were maintained until at least the 14th century, probably as late as the arrival of the Spanish. The site remained relatively unknown due to its remoteness, until the first modern road was opened up to Coba in the early 1970s. Once the major resort of Cancun was planned the Mexican government realized that clearing and restoring some of this enormous Mayan archaeological ...

Copán, an ancient Mayan city in western Honduras near the Guatemalan frontier
Duration : 747 Seconds

A treat for all my archaeology friends out there. Copán is translated to Wooden Bridge, however, the Mayan name is pronounced [something like] "chu pee", for, "City of the Bat" or "City of the Bird". Located in Honduras, near the frontier of Guatemala, Copán is renowned for it's courts, altars, and stele, laden with hieroglyphs explaining the details of the ethnosphere in the Mayan city. In its' small size, Copán, was a great experience with an extremely well done museum preserving the finds. Our guide said that "If Tikal is New York, then Copán is Paris." - he is brilliant! The following is a compilation of videos from the courts, pavilions, and tunnels of the original Bat City - Copán! Enjoy, Jonathan Ferrier
