The "National Anthem of Honduras" (Spanish Himno Nacional de Honduras) was adopted under presidential decree 42 in 1915. The lyrics were written by Augusto Constancio Coello and the music composed by Carlos Hartling. In its entirety, the anthem is a brief chronology of Honduran history. The anthem consists of the chorus and seven verses. But, for official acts, only the chorus and the seventh are sung. The chorus, which is sung before and after the seventh verse, is a description of Honduras' chief national symbols, the flag and the coat of arms. The eighth verse, is a patriotic call to duty to Hondurans to defend the flag and the nation. By the time Hondurans complete their sixth year of elementary education, they will have memorized and been taught the meaning of all eight verses. Unofficially, the anthem is sometimes called "Tu bandera es un lampo de cielo" (Spanish for "Your flag is a splendor of sky") which is also the first line of the chorus. English Translation: English : CHORUS Your flag is a splendour of sky Crossed with a band of snow; And there can be seen, in its sacred depths, (repeat) Five pale blue stars. Those seeking a cultural experience off the beaten track should consider The Lenca Trail, a 76-mile route spanning from Santa Rosa de Copán to La Esperanza in the Western Highlands. In a series of charming towns, visitors will encounter the Lenca people one of the largest indigenous groups in Honduras. A great gateway to the route is the town of Gracias, home to colonial churches, a Lenca museum, historical fort, and a Farmers Market where the Lenca people sell their vegetables and pottery. Cruise excursion--we had an encounter with Mr. French, a 7 year old 150 lb. dolphin. We got kisses & hugs, some history and information, and watched him perform some tricks. This was followed by 30 minutes of snorkeling with a pod of dolphins. I would A+++ do this again. What an amazing experience.

Their adventure is documented here in The Millennium Adventure. The Pre-Columbian city today known as Copán is a locale in western Honduras, in the Copán Department, near to the Guatemalan border. It is the site of a major Maya kingdom of the Classic era (5th through 9th Centuries). The kingdom, anciently named Xukpi (Corner-Bundle), flourished from the 5th century AD to the early 9th century, with antecedents going back to at least the 2nd century AD. Its name is an apparent reference to the fact that it was situated at the far southern and eastern end of Maya territory. The nearby modern village of Copán Ruinas itself may have anciently been known as Oxwitik. The site in Copan is known for producing a remarkable series of portrait stelae, most of which were placed along processional ways in the central plaza of the city and the adjoining "acropolis" (a large complex of overlapping step-pyramids, plazas, and palaces). The stelae and sculptured decorations of the buildings of Copán are some of the very finest surviving art of ancient Mesoamerica.
