Andreas H. Landl 1' interviews of the Members of the "Competence Network", Workshop for * human rights and democracy learning, * development of the civil society, * sustainable ecology, all in all in the broad field of the "Culture of Peace" Vienna, Austria - November 06 -- November 12, 2009 Don-Bosco-House in Vienna The "Competence-Network" is a newly initiated project by the Konfliktkultur association, organized by Susanne Jalka. Konfliktkultur is a non profit NGO, founded 1998, promoting and organizing various projects and workshops, publishing material on constructive conflict handling and on peace education. Further information on: www.konfliktkultur.at The objective of the project "Competence-Network" is to organize a workshop in Vienna and to invite representatives of organizations from Eastern and Western countries which had been separated by the Iron Curtain. We want to initiate a reflection process which will hopefully be followed by netthinking and networking between former separated cultures. It seems to us, that too often the old separations still exist in our minds. Our partner in Austria is the "Austrian Network for Peace and Non-violence" which was founded as a contribution to the International Decade 2001-2010 for Peace and Non-violence for the children of the world. Together we hope to initiate and to support the development of good relations at the planned workshop in Vienna, which will take place from 6th till 12th of November 2009. And we have in mind ...

Bosnia accused of ignoring sexual violence
Duration : 154 Seconds

Bosnia-Herzegovina is being urged to honour its commitment to victims of sexual violence during the 1990s war, as human rights group Amnesty International accused the government of negelcting many of the survivors. While much of society has moved on from the atrocities committed during the three-year war, which began in 1992, there are many who have had to suffer in silence. One rape victim, Enisa Salcinovic, told Al Jazeera that she hoped her testimonies would hlep those who perpetrated the crimes to face justice. Al Jazeera's Azhur Sukri reports.

Clinton in Serbia: Lectures on inclusive society, NATO & EU carrots
Duration : 275 Seconds

All sides in ethnically diverse Bosnia must work together and embrace political reform if they want NATO and EU membership. That's the warning from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit to the Balkans. Many Bosnian Muslims and Croats want a strong central government, but Serbs living in the country fear this will rob them of their autonomy. Serbs also believe the US keeps putting pressure on them. And resentment lingers over the NATO forces joining the 90-s ethnic conflict on the side of the Muslim population and bombing the capital Sarajevo. For more on Clinton's visit, RT's Anissa Naouai talks to Serbian historian Nebojsa Malic.

Interpreting and remembering genocide at the Srebrenica-Potočari memorial
Duration : 449 Seconds

The CRIC Research project has investigated the use of memorials, commemorations and anniversary events to understand the way communities attempt to come to terms with catastrophic loss of life. Significant sites across Europe provide examples of the way memories of conflict are interpreted and transmitted, and the role this plays in post conflict identity formation. This film describes the development of the Potočari Memorial Centre at Srebrenica to commemorate those who died during the genocide against the Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) population in eastern Bosnia in July 1995. Dr Dzenan Sahovic's analysis outlines the diametrically different views held by Bosniak and Serb groups towards the events at Srebrenica. His research examines the changing use and meaning of this contested site and the impact this has on Bosnian politics. The images in the film were taken on the 15th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide when mass burials and large rallies were taking place at the memorial centre. *Gerald Knaus Our objective is to understand Bosnian society today. The most basic issue is: what do Bosnians live off today? It's a question that Bosnian political elites, administrations and governments find difficult to answer. Given the depth of the social and economic crisis, we shouldn't be surprised to find that they are struggling to put together a credible policy response. We need to need to describe the problems of government in Bosnia in a way that doesn't use this accusatory language of "the nationalists," "the communists," or "the thieves," or "the corrupt elite." We are trying to understand these twin Bosnian problems, and how they interact: the crisis of the economy and its impact on society; and the weakness of the policy process and public institutions. Between them, they create an enormous temptation for the international community to step in and try to solve the problems on behalf of the Bosnians. And this creates a vicious circle, and this is what we need to begin to grasp analytically, but also show how one might be able to break out of the vicious circle, so that Bosnia could begin to be seen and treated like any other post-socialist European country, and to receive the type of assistance it needs.

A Mirror of Evolving Society / Zrcalo društva u nastajanju - Viktor Ivančić NDK 2012
Duration : 750 Seconds

The Duško Kondor Award for Affirmation of Civil Courage is given to Viktor Ivančić from Split, Croatia, because, although aware of the risks, he has affirmed civil courage since the 1980s, as follows: • Apprehensive of the destructive potential of the predominant political ideology in Croatia, he became a co-founder of the political satire weekly Feral Tribune to provide objective, impartial and independent information to the citizens of Croatia. • His refusal to accept political dictation by those in power was expressed in his writings and his editorial policy, constantly, relentlessly, regardless of the price he was paying. • He wrote and published an impressive number of articles and columns in which, regardless of hard consequences, he disclosed, named and revealed various flaws in the social and political milieu of Croatia and SFRY. • During the war in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, as a journalist and editor-in-chief of Feral Tribune, he argued continuously and consistently against war, violence and crimes, and zealously promoted just peace and cooperation among the states and peoples of the former Yugoslavia as the only possible and moral option. • In the last twenty-three years of his work he has been dedicated to the affirmation of civil courage through his own example of a journalist who does not give up presenting truth in the most dangerous times when evil forces do not hesitate to seek to intimidate journalists - even throw bombs at the office of ...
