Mostar, straddling its beloved river, is the leading city of the southern part of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Its 400-year-old stone bridge was once a symbol of multi-cultural community but collapsed under artillery shells when Yugoslavia fell apart in the 1990s. Today, Mostar is rebuilding, and ethnic divisions are gradually fading. And the new Old Bridge, rebuilt using the original materials, is a promising sign of reconciliation. Facts/History: Tuzla is a city and municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the time of the 1991 census, it had 83770 inhabitants, while the municipality 131318. Taking the influx of refugees into account, the city is currently estimated to have 174558 inhabitants. After Sarajevo, and Banja Luka, Tuzla is the third largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the seat of the Tuzla Canton and Tuzla Municipality. The name "Tuzla" is the Turkish word for salt mine, and refers to the extensive salt deposits found underneath the city. The city of Tuzla has Europe's only salt lake as part of its central park and also has around 100000 people visiting its shores every year. The history of the town Tuzla goes back to 1510 when Tuzla was a Turkish garrison town. During the 19th century it passed under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and was incorporated into Yugoslavia in 1918 Google Earth: Tuzla doesn't seem to have google street view. This means we can't walk around and see what we'd see if we were there. Nobody has taken pics of your streets yet. A UNESCO World Heritage site divided by the Neretva River with Croats on one side and Muslims on the other. Mostar was founded by the Turks during the 15th century. The city and famed old bridge (Stari Most) was the most heavily bombed following the break-up of Yugoslavia. Mostar has painstakingly been rebuilt, stone by stone. An easy town to walk around without guides since all attractions centrally located. (Our guide in Mostar was quite boring.) TIP Wear good shoes to keep from getting heels caught in the stone grooves.

(www.fojnica.ba/english) The first settlement was founded in the second millennium of the old era. The river Fojnica is gold-bearing. "Golden River" brought here-in the ancient Romans, in masses. Fojnica is the first mint. Also, the first trade and handicraft centre. Kozograd, Zvonigrad and Kašteli are ancient Bosnian towns in this region. The town of Fojnica exist from the year 1365. In the year 1469, Fojnica was inhabited by 329 families. Mostar had only 19 families, in the very same year. The Franciscan monastery keeps 17.000 volumes and 13 incunabula printed up to the year 1500. The same monastery also holds the "Ahdnama", the permit issued by the Sultan Mehmed Fatih The Second to Bosnian Franciscans. There are famous and old mosques: Atik -- Srednja (1551), Hadžimuharemova (1682), and Čaršijska placed on the place of Šaban-Ahmedova (1666). Dervish's-houses (Tekkes): Vukeljići and Oglavak. The "Musafirhana", family house of the Salihagić. "Gornja mahala" oldest part of Fojnica with old (traditional) Bosnian houses. At the end, famous healing of thermal water from centuries. (Bosnian) Tekija na vrelu Bune u Blagaju (English) Blagaj is a village-town some 12 km southeast of Mostar (Herzegovina-Neretva Canton) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Blagaj is situated at the famous source of the Buna river and a historical tekke (tekija or Dervish monastery) which is a part of the "Townscape ensemble of the town of Blagaj - Historical and Natural Heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina". The Blagaj Tekija was built around 1520, with the elements of Ottoman architecture and Mediterranean style. It´s currently a national monument which attracts tourists. The source of the Buna river (Vrelo Bune) is a strong karstic spring. The Buna flows west for approximately 9 kilometres and joins the Neretva near the village Buna. It was the seat of Herzegovinian ruler, Stefan Vukčić and also the birthplace of Bosnian queen Katarina Kosača-Kotromanić

Bosnia and Herzegovina is one country divided into two separate governmental entities and populated by three ethnic groups with strong cultural identities- Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), Croats and Serbs. This triangular shaped country on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe is bordered by Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. In determining whether to separate from Yugoslavia in 1991, Bosnia and Herzegovina became involved in a devastating three-year civil war. Fighting broke out along ethnic lines where few cultural differences had previously existed. The war left over 200000 people dead, half the population displaced, and much of the country's infrastructure and economy destroyed. The 1995 Dayton Peace Accord ended the war and established a governmental plan to include all three ethnic factions. The new plan called for dividing the country into two entities - the Bosnian-Croat Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Bosnian Serb Republic or Republika Srpska. Each entity has its own governing powers with a central Bosnian government having three presidents -- one from each ethnic group -- who rotate every eight months. International peacekeepers from NATO and more recently the European Union have helped stabilize the country, but with unemployment as high as 50-70% in some areas, addressing economic issues is a priority.
