Major Events Ordered by Date: 1492 Christopher Columbus lands and claims the island of Hispaniola for Spain. The Spanish build the New World's first settlement at La Navidad on Haiti's north coast. 1697 Spanish control over the colony ends with the Treaty of Ryswick, which divided the island into French-controlled St. Domingue and Spanish Santo Domingo. For over 100 years the colony of St. Domingue (known as the Pearl of the Antilles) was France's most important overseas territory, which supplied it with sugar, rum, coffee and cotton. At the height of slavery, near the end of the 18th century, some 500000 people mainly of western African origin, were enslaved by the French. 1791-1803 A slave rebellion is launched by the Jamaican-born Boukman leading to a protracted 13-year war of liberation against St. Domingue's colonists and later, Napoleon's army which was also assisted by Spanish and British forces. The slave armies were commanded by General Toussaint Louverture who was eventually betrayed by his officers Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Henri Christophe who opposed his policies, which included reconciliation with the French. He was subsequently exiled to France where he died. 1803 The Haitian blue and red flag is devised at Arcahie, by taking the French tricolor, turning it in its side and removing the white band. The centre d'art de Port-au-Prince in Haiti, was founded in 1944 by Dewitt Peters.An American who went to Haiti to teach english. During its thirteen years in existence, the centre d'art has given an equal opportunity to several hundred individuals,the great majority were from the lower class. A few of them have seized the opportunity, becoming in the process good and individualistic artists and greatly improving their social and economic positions.Men like Hector Hyppolite,Castera Bazile and Philome Obin have all been given support by the centre d'art. The fact that the larger percentage of these artists came from the lower or submerged class has been the greatest contribution of the Centre d'Art to Haitian culture and to Haitian society.

Kids from the NEHS help pack food for Haiti.... During its three days of packaging meals for a Haitian relief effort on Jan 28-30, Lake And Sumter Emergency Recovery (LASER) recruited more than 1300 volunteers. This was huge success, said Michael Tart, Executive Director of LASER. We filled the Lake County Sheriffs Office tractor-trailer completely with 20 pallets of meals. In all, volunteers spent 15600 hours packaging more than 200000 meals for distribution in Haiti. The meals, which cost about 23 cents apiece, included healthy, vitamin-rich foods, such as rice and soy.

Known as the Jude Celestin Plan for the Empowerment of Haitians with Disabilities, it has four salient parts. 1) The first part of the plan consists in providing disabled Haitians with educational opportunities to succeed in life. 2) The second part of the plan is to provide them with equal opportunities vis-à-vis other sections of the Haiti population and to end discrimination against them. Jude Celestin government will also improve both physical and mental health care for disabled Haitians. 3) The third part of the plan envisages creating jobs in respect of disabled Haitians. 4)The final part of the plan seeks to support community-based living for disabled Haitians to ensure that disabled Haitians live with respect and dignity in complete harmony with other sections of Haitian society.
