This documentary depicts the life in Haiti after the end of the Duvalier regime in 1986. Those who have lived in the country before or during the Duvalier's era would agree that thus far the Haitian Ancestors had given their lives in vain for a country that the world has left too far behind. Two hundred and seven years after the independence in 1804, Haiti continues to subsist based on the international aids that dishonest Haitian politicians receive and pocket on a yearly basis. Haiti is one of the most beautiful tropical places that you can ever imagine, but as the world sees its importance and beauty the corrupted Haitian Officials and past leaders are patently blinded by the vast income that they are pocketing from handing the country's resources to outsiders. They couldn't care less whether they swam or navigated thru the filth across the capital or the country as long as they had a fat bank account. However, all that will one day change. Haitian President Rene Preval said Sunday that the death toll from the earthquake could reach 300000 once all the bodies are recovered from the rubble. We speak to Peter Hallward, professor of Modern European Philosophy at Middlesex University. Unless prevented by renewed popular mobilisation in both Haiti and beyond, the perverse international emphasis on security will continue to distort the reconstruction effort, and with it the configuration of Haitian politics for some time to come, wrote Hallward recently. What is already certain is that if further militarisation proceeds unchecked, the victims of the January earthquake wont be the only avoidable casualties of 2010.
