| | Timberland Earthkeepers in Haiti: The Farmers Duration : 105 Seconds We've planted 1.4 million trees in Haiti since 2010, when we launched the Timberland Tree Nursery and Training project in the Gonaives region. Less than 2% of Haiti's original forests remain due to a long history of unsustainable land use practices and a continuing dependence on tree wood and charcoal for cooking and heating needs. The deforestation causes a decline in soil fertility which results in erosion that leads to extensive flooding and depleted groundwater supplies and food insecurity. The Timberland tree nursery project in Haiti is an example of our commitment to Earthkeepers -- the philosophy that guides us in everything we do. By building a community-based agroforestry model that includes eight tree nurseries run by volunteer farmers throughout the Gonaives region, Timberland is connecting those farmers with trees, seeds, tools and training. The combination of these elements has resulted in larger crop yields, which means more food to eat, crops to sell and increased income for the farmers and their families. | | Haiti Circle of Friends: Farming For Families Project.wmv Duration : 116 Seconds HaitiCoF is raising funds to support an organic mini farm. We are providing the mothers of the children in our project with a means of income and to give them the overall support they need to successfully reintegrate with their children -- and ultimately, to keep their children out of neglectful orphanages. Our small scale farm empowers women to achieve financial independence to support and feed their children. Of equal importance: the mini-farm also subsidizes food costs for the HCOF family house. | | Dr. Paul Farmer on Bill Clinton's Apology for Wrecking Haitian Rice Farming: "A Great Relief" Duration : 312 Seconds DemocracyNow.org - Shortly after becoming the UN Special Envoy to Haiti, former President Bill Clinton publicly apologized for forcing Haiti to drop tariffs on imported subsidized US rice during his time in office. The policy wiped out Haitian rice farming, seriously damaged Haiti's ability to be self-sufficient, and contributed to Haiti's forced urbanization that likely increased the earthquake toll. Dr. Paul Farmer, who serves as Clinton's deputy in Haiti, told Democracy Now! today: "I felt a sense of great relief just hearing him say that. I felt grateful for it as an American." | | The Future is Growing in Haiti Duration : 188 Seconds World Accord International Development Agency partnering with FIDA-PCH in Haiti used their own unique sustainability model to help local farmers and villiagers in a small town in Haiti. The problem Nelson describes is that Aide parachutes in with a "peacemail" approach - whether its giving seeds, credits... and then walking away, doesn't help establish the village for years to come. This is/was not the approach that World Accord and FIDA-PCH took when deciding to enter Haiti. First on the agenda was to talk with the local Haitians and determine how best World Accord and it's partners can help. They spoke, listened and implemented a strategic plan that has become the model of success in Haiti. Literacy was another important concern for the villagers. In order to solidify a loan from the bank, they needed to sign their name. Watch the success unravel and the lives of the local Haitians be forever changed! Diouf distributed seeds, fertilizer and tools to farmers at a planting ceremony in the village of Palmisse a Ven, near the earthquakes epicenter in Leogane. Diouf met with Haitian President Rene Preval and other senior government officials, including Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive and Minister of Agriculture Joanas Gue. Diouf and Gue also signed the Leogane Declaration, signaling the commitment of FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development to work together on programmes aimed at increasing food production, supporting the integration of displaced populations in rural areas and building a revitalized, sustainable Haitian agriculture sector and promoting long-term investment. According to FAO, a significant increase in national food production, rural employment and reforestation are key to a greener, more productive Haiti.
