A recent national CBS broadcast on the work that religious groups are doing in Haiti features the work of JDC, including interviews with CEO Steven Schwager and JDC Haiti Representative Gideon Herscher. The reports focuses on JDC's newly dedicated rehabilitation clinic and prosthetic workshop developed together with Israel's Magen David Adom and Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer Hospital as well as the Haitian Red Cross and the HUEH (l'Hôpital de l'Université d'Etat d'Haïti). The modernized facilities are the first of their kind in Haiti. JDC's non-sectarian disaster relief programs are funded by special appeals of the Jewish Federations of North America and tens of thousands of individual donors to JDC.

Petit Seminaire College St Martial (PSCSM) College St Martial is a Catholic school established since 1865 by the Spiritans (Congregation of Holy Ghost). Originally it was a minor seminary (petit séminaire) for candidates to the priesthood. However, since 1872 it has operated as an open school where generations of Haitians have acquired a good quality of education. From 1865 to 1969 more than 300 Spiritans missionaries (priests and brothers) have proudly worked and ministered at this school. In 1969 the Spiritans were expelled from Haiti and the college confiscated. When a small group returned from exile at the end of Duvalier dictatorship in 1986, it was a long process to get the college back to the Congregation. That happened in 1995. The school accommodates up to 1700 students in three different sections: Kindergarten: 200 students Elementary: 760 Secondary: 800 According to the latest estimation, up to 76% of the Haitian population can neither read nor write. Its the result of years of state mismanagement and education under funding. There are very few public schools in the entire country. So, only those who can pay get the chance to have an education. This situation challenges the Spiritan group working in Haiti to consider education as one of our mission priorities since returning from exile. Creole / Kreyòl Studies I (Pierre) FRN 190.01 TTh 11:40am-12:55pm An introduction to the essential elements of Haitian Creole or Kreyòl language and aspects of Haitian culture. The first of the two-semester sequence of elementary Haitian Creole or Kreyòl. the course provides practice in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing the language, culturally contextualized through units on health care, Haitian women's rights issues, and unpaid child servants (restavèk). Students will acquire enough vocabulary and idioms to be able to interact with Haitians. Each participant will pick a theme to work on and write a two-page final project. The textbooks "Kreyòl Ayisyen pou Swen Sante (KAPSS)" and "Ann Pale Kreyòl (APK)" will be supplemented by texts retrieved from Haitian websites and Haitian newspapers. Copies of these texts will be handed out three weeks before working on them in class. Additional cultural and grammatical notions will be explored in relation to each lesson from KAPSS and APK dialogues introduced in class. Throughout the course participants will be exposed to different aspects of Haitian culture through documentaries, music, films, card games, and proverbs. No prerequisite.
