Led by renowned artist Edouard Duval-Carrié, it brought together faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and visitors in the process. Who was Joe Gaetjens? the man who scored the greatest goal in American soccer history. Joseph Edouard Gaetjens was born March 19, 1924, Port-au-Prince, Haiti; presumed dead July 1964, Haiti) was a Haitian soccer player who played for the United States national team in the 1950 FIFA World Cup, scoring the winning goal in the 1--0 upset of England. Born in Haiti to a Haitian mother and a German father, Gaetjens's great-grandfather Thomas, a native of Bremen, had been sent to Haiti by Frederick William III, the King of Prussia, as a business emissary. The family was quite prosperous, and although by the time of Joe's birth their wealth had decreased significantly, they were still among the Haitian elite. When Gaetjens was born, his father even registered the birth certificate with the German embassy, in case Joe ever wanted to gain German citizenship. Gaetjens joined Etoile Haïtienne at the age of 14 and won two Ligue Haïtienne championships in 1942 and 1944. However, he could not make a living from professional soccer, so he went to New York City in the late 1940s to study accounting at Columbia University on a scholarship from the Haitian government. While there he played for Brookhattan of the American Soccer League, winning the league's scoring title. His success for the team attracted the attention of US Soccer, and Gaetjens made the national team for the 1950 World Cup. I am sorry you all. I know this is not the usual premise for my channel but i had to vent. Pat Roberson said that Haiti made a pact with the devil which is the cause of their suffering is blow from mother nature, Haiti has suffered because European-dominated nations have been "punishing" them for having the audacity to actually fight for their independence.Throughout history Haiti has been sanctioned, barred from export and trade, denied aid and resources, and had to endure the military coups and despotic rule that come as a result of that kind of treatment from the rest of the world. In 1779, a light infantry regiment, Les Chasseurs Volontaires de Saint-Domingue, was formed under the command of Henry Joseph Chevalier de Forestier. Regiment was made up of 545 free 'men of colour'. les Chasseurs Volontaires de Saint-Domingue Regiment was the largest "all Black regiment " on either side to take part in the american revolution war. The Regiment was also the first French Black regiment in the history of the French Army. Remarkably, neither these facts seem to be well known. After capturing Grenada, Admiral Valerie d'Estaing landed in Saint Domingue and the Regiment joined his force. D'Estaing's force of 3000 men landed in Georgia in September 1779 and was joined by the American force under the command of Benjamin Lincoln for the siege of Savannah. The Chasseurs comprised 10% of the Franco-American Army. The siege lasted six weeks. On the 9th of October, after a long artillery barrage from both on and off shore, the Franco-American force attacked Savannah which was commanded by Gen Augustine Prevost. Leading the troops along with d'Estaing and Lincoln were the Polish Count Casimir Pulaski and Lt Col Francis 'Swamp Fox' Marion. Both d'Estaing and Pulaski were wounded. Although initially successful, the allies were driven back by the counterattack of the British Regular reserves commanded by Col John Maitland.
