Walter Rodney Guyanese activist and Marxist scholar Walter Rodney emerged from these post-colonial struggles. Rodney advocated a class analysis based on multinational workers unity. Although he faced threats and repression throughout his life, Rodney fought for socialism as a respected historian, professor and most importantly, a dedicated political organizer. It was his work as a political organizer that led to his assassination in his native Guyana on June 13, 1980.

The Rotary Club of Georgetown Central and residents of the East Ruimveldt community in Georgetown, Guyana collaborated on an Information Technology training programme in 2010. Some of the participants were early school leavers. The Rotary Club had been engaging in literacy and other programmes to increase the skills of the community members. In this series of relfections, two of the participants Michelle Chin and Charmeain Richardson talk about the programme, and the trainer Lynette Fraser talks about the skills needed to ensure successful adult learning.

Eskar was abandoned emotionally and physically by his parents as a child. He moved to the US and began a downward path of alcoholism, fighting, and jail sentences. One night in jail, he was leafing through a Bible where he discovered the power to change. Upon release from jail, he was deported back to Guyana where he now runs a half-way house to help ease ex-criminals back into society. Its the only place of its kind in the entire country.

Guyana, a country with a population of around 750000 has an HIV prevalence of 2.5 per cent in the age group of 15-49 which accounts for 52 per cent of the country's population. The epidemic in Guyana is considered generalized, and it is mainly a heterosexual epidemic. Despite the encouraging signs with regard to reducing HIV prevalence among most-at-risk populations, there is still much to do to tackle the problem of scant awareness of HIV/AIDS. That's why the Government of Guyana, through strong partnerships with employers and workers organizations are trying to increase the number of people being counselled and tested. Thanks to the support of the ILO, the United States Department of Labor (USDOL), the US President Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and additional resources from the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), HIV/AIDS workplace education and prevention programmes are now reaching even the most remote areas of the country.

After he left the Giuliani administration in 1995, Benschop worked in the Caribbean press and in public access television for a time before deciding to return to Guyana in late 1999 to marry his fiancée, now wife, Maria. They lived in the capital city, Georgetown, while waiting for her visa to enter the United States. Benschop said he got the idea to host a talk show on Guyana television. That show, "Straight Talk," debuted in 1999, the same year Bharrat Jagdeo was elected that nation's president for the first time. Jagdeo was reelected in 2006. Guyana had a turbulent political history even before gaining independence from the British in 1966. Animosity between the two largest political parties - the People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP) and the People's National Congress/Reform (PNC/R) - has been augmented by racial issues: The PPP, the current ruling party, is composed primarily of Indo-Guyanese, descendants of East Indians brought to Guyana by the British as indentured servants, while the PNC constituency is mainly Afro-Guyanese, descendants of former slaves. Benschop said he worked hard to be fair to both sides. "I thought [Jagdeo] was a young president, and I should give him time to prove himself," he said. Benschop also criticized the PNC leadership, which he considered old and out of step with the country. "I'm a journalist," Benschop said. "I just wanted to do my job as a journalist."
