| | From Ancient Farmers, Lessons for Today's Amazon Duration : 240 Seconds This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report , from voaspecialenglish.com | http South America's Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest and river system on Earth. But the Amazon is disappearing at the rate of about eight hundred thousand hectares a year. This deforestation is caused by an increase in agriculture and cattle ranching and the building of roads and dams. Another cause is the illegal cutting of trees for logging companies. Now, a new study says ancient Amazonian farming methods could offer valuable lessons for today. The study looks at the pre-Columbian period. Christopher Columbus and other European explorers began arriving in the Americas in the late fourteen hundreds. The researchers studied a coastal wetland area where ancient farm beds and canals remain unchanged. The site is in French Guyana. A widely held belief is that pre-Columbian farmers used a great deal of fire to manage Amazonian ecosystems. But the scientists say their study calls this idea into question. It shows that raised-field farmers limited their burning to improve agricultural production.Jose Iriarte from the University of Exeter in England was lead author of the study. Mr. Iriarte says fire results in the loss of important nutrients for crops. When land is not being used for farming, periods without fire are most effective in rebuilding soil organic matter and preserving soil structure. "So in this sense," he says, "we interpreted that they were limiting fires because it was ... The pastor is a man of God and we try to support him financially as the Lord provides.PLEASE READ THIS LETTER FROM PASTOR RON WRITTEN TO MY YOU TUBE FRIENDS. "I am pastor Ronald, a pastor of two churches in a remote area in Guyana. Moruca is a Amerindian reservation with a population of 7000. In many aspects, life in Moruca is very difficult. In my home village of Kamwatta we have 602 people. Only 22 people are permanent workers with the government. All others try to survive with farming, hunting, and fishing. The economy here is very bad and work pay remains the same while the cost of goods have increased tremendously and the introduction of the VAT Tax attached to costs makes the poor suffer worse than ever. Basically our monthly earnings make it just for necessary food, nothing left for other expenses. Lack of medical care for complicated cases is difficult such as ultrasound, Xray, eye examination, and surgeries, have to be done in the city which is very far from our village. All travel is done by boat or canoe. This is many times impossible because traveling costs by a moter boat are very high. Doctor fees, prescription medications, meals, and accomodations amounts to a large sum of money. Due to bad ... | | The LIfe of a Canadian Goat Farmer Video Duration : 94 Seconds www.virtualfarmtours.ca A Canadian farming couple who raise market goats explains why they got into the business. Transcript (market goat farm) Adrian -- Bonny and the kids and I got into farming about four years ago. We purchased this farm and we were looking at a commodity to get involved with. We originally looked into getting involved with dairy goats. At that time there were no contracts being set fourth. So we looked at alternatives and we came up with meat goats as the alternative, as I work off the farm as well and it's something that Bonny can manage on her own during the day. We like living on a farm in a rural setting. It's a great place for the kids to grow up, as well as being on our own and working with the animals close to the rural setting and nature. Bonny -- Well we chose to do goats as our livestock operation also because they're small enough for me to handle while my husband is off at work. And I find them intelligent, curious. Generally every day we are out twice a day. When it's kidding season I'll be coming out every two hours, to check on the does, the moms that are ready to have their babies. We call the babies kids. As they get closer, I'll stay in the barn and watch them overnight. If they've had the babies, I'll get up through the night to check on them. Just to make sure they remember where to find mom, where the milk is, and make sure they're not getting too cold. Tags :OFAC, Canadian, goat, farming, Ontario, agriculture, farm, life
