| | A year of change in PNG politics - Australia Network Duration : 221 Seconds Politics in Papua New Guinea has always been lively - but this year has been more dramatic than most. After nearly a decade of political stability - this week saw the end of the government led by Sir Michael Somare. | | Voters in Guinea-Bissau went to the polls on Sunday looking Duration : 77 Seconds Guinea Bissau has gone to the polls to elect a replacement for assassinated former president Joao Bernardo Vieira. One top contender for the presidency of one of continental Africas smallest states, was also killed during the election campaign. Voters in Guinea-Bissau went to the polls on Sunday looking for a leader who can give them a chance to end years of military infighting and cocaine smuggling cartels. Former president Joao Bernardo Vieira was assassinated in March in apparent revenge for the killing of the head of the army. Whoever of the 11 standing candidates wins, the challenge ahead will be to pull the state back from failure and reforming security forces that are little more than rival militias. [Unidentified Male Voter]: "We need peace for our country to develop economically, socially and politically." There were no reports of trouble on Sunday as voters queued in rural villages and Bissau, the run-down coastal capital of the former Portuguese colony. [Unidentified Female Voter]: "Guinea Bissau has a lot of problems, that's why I'm voting for a new president." The vote is a test not only for the country of around 1.6 million people, but for a region worried at the retreat of democracy after coups in Guinea and Mauritania, and a deepening political crisis in Niger. [Carlos Gomez, Jr. Guinea Bissau Prime Minister]: "I think people will vote massively so Guinea can achieve political stability." Squabbling within the states military has been worsened by the ... | | Papua New Guinea: Land of the Unexpected Duration : 313 Seconds Get more great videos: www.youtube.com Be our Myspace friend: myspace.com Few areas of the globe can match Papua New Guinea in terms of biodiversity. The country's rugged natural settings are home to a staggering array of wildlife, including more than 21000 species of higher plants, 200 species of mammals, and 700 species of birds. Papua New Guinea's indigenous clans are linguistically just as diverse; more than 800 languages are spoken within the nation's borders. These numerous clans also hold the key to conserving both their cultural and natural wealth of their country, specifically because they control approximately 90 percent of the nation's territory through a system of traditional land tenure. Because almost all of the land in Papua New Guinea is owned by its people, and not by the government, conservation efforts need to be approved and enforced by the local landowners. Crater Mountain is one of these landowner and NGO cooperative conservation initiatives in PNG.
