| | Rendering the soul 'Trish' - Jeffry Feeger Duration : 301 Seconds Trish is from Kambot Village, located upon a tributary of the middle 'Sepik River,' East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. I traveled down the Sepik River in June of 2010 with a colleague Dr Susan Cochrane. During which time I was able to share and exchange artistic culture with local artists. I was also able to meet and photograph a lot of interesting people, such as the young and uniquely beautiful,Trish. Trish's portrait is part of an entire collection of 14 Sepik River portraits that I and my 4 year old son Axel have painted using the photographs taken. I created this video to take you through the stages of intensity and creativity that hide behind my final works on a gallery wall. Using elements of magic learnt from traditional culture, such as ritual, fasting, and dreaming, I open my mind to spiritual connection. I teach and share my knowledge with my four-year-old son Axel. Together we create the painting and share a spiritual bond with each other through the process. We also share creation with the spirits of our ancestors. No mark in the process is a mistake and everything is as it should be. | | Art Across Cultures - Lawrence Rinder Duration : 458 Seconds Complete video at: fora.tv Lawrence Rinder, former Curator of Contemporary Art at the Whitney Museum, challenges our Western conceptions of art by contrasting them with the art sense of a very different culture, the Maisin tribe of Papua New Guinea. ----- Lawrence Rinder discusses "Art Life: Selected Writing 1991--2005." "Art Life" brings together for the first time in a single publication many of the important essays on contemporary art written over the past 15 years by Rinder, one of America's most influential curators. This significant publication, which combines intellectual rigor with accessible prose, is an exciting and welcome reminder, especially in today's market-driven art world, that contemporary art can and should be experienced as a natural part of all of our lives - Codys Dean of Graduate Studies at California College of the Arts, Lawrence Rinder was previously Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator of Contemporary Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where he organized exhibitions including The American Effect, BitSteams, the 2002 Biennial, and Tim Hawkinson. Prior to his work at the Whitney, Rinder was founding director of the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts and assistant director and curator for twentieth-century art at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. His art criticism has been published in Flash Art, Artforum, Nest, The Village Voice, Fillip, and Parkett. | | Painting a Political Star Duration : 381 Seconds While I was down in Sydney, Papua New Guinea's very own Deputy Prime Minister Belden Namah created a media frenzy; appearing on front pages of Australian newspapers with allegations made against him of sexual harassment, heavy intoxication & gross spending at Sydney's Star casino. So on Friday the 16th of March, the day before I left Sydney I decided to paint live in public outside the Opera House and portray our deputy PM in a more dignified, respectful manner, showing the kind of leader we wish we could have representing our country. PNG's very own talented 3D Animator Samson Korawali and renowned journalist Alexander Rheeney were also on hand to document every moment. Together we were able to muster a small crowd of wantoks and engage conversation with passers by. This kind of impromptu performance and collaboration is what we believe to be the result of a significant paradigm shift in the expression of human beings, being spurred on by rapid changes in media technology and the social media revolution now sweeping Papua New Guinea and the world. We hope that new forms of self expression through art and media can become powerful tools to guide, influence and inspire young people for positive change towards greater sense of self, identity and empowerment. | | Manecas Costa~Fundo Di Matu Duration : 332 Seconds (Guinea-Bissau) Guinea-Bissau is a small counrty on the West African coast sandwiched between Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south. A former colony of Portugal, Guinea-Bissau achieved its independence less than 30 years ago and it is still struggling to establish a stable political structure. Manuel Leal Emidio Costa, or Manecas Costa, was born in 1967 and was raised in the capital city of Bissau. He founded his first band, Africa Live, with his brother when he was just 9 years old, and the group of adolescents went on to the be child stars in Guinea-Bissau with a string of popular appearences. | | Speed Painting Salif Keita (Ana Na Ming) Duration : 194 Seconds Facebook : www.facebook.com DeviantArt : mathurin156.deviantart.com Done in approximately 2h40. music: "Ananamin", Moffou by Salif keita. visit my blog at : mathurin-dubouetiez.blogspot.com Salif Keita Biography Salif Keita - A master of West African rhythms and credited as one of the founders of the Afro-pop genre, Keita is world renowned for his unforgettable live performances, soaring vocals and his emotionally-fueled songs. Born in Mali, West Africa in 1949, Salif Keita comes from a noble family, and is a descendant of Sunjata Keita, who founded the Mali Empire in 1240. Keita was the third of thirteen children born to Sina Keita, a landowner in the village of Djoliba, where he grew up, near Malis capital, Bamako. Born albino in a land of blistering sun and heat, with limited eyesight and poor despite his social standing, his mother had to hide him to avoid the attacks of the superstitious crowds who called for his death. In addition to the problems of growing up as an albino, Keita found the opposition of his family to his interest in becoming a singer since the traditions of his ancestry excluded members of the nobility from becoming singers. Keitas decision to become a musician broke an important taboo as in Mali only the lower jeli class makes its living from music. In 1970, at the age of 18, Salif Keita left Djoliba for Bamako, where he spent time as a street musician and playing in bars. The first group that he worked with was the Rail Band, a state-sponsored ... Tags :speed, painting, salif, keita, photoshop, wacom, intuos, digital, illustration, portrait, moffou
