2009 Gnaoua Music Festival: Essaouira, Morocco
Duration : 119 Seconds

This was my favorite act of the festival: Maleem Mahmoud Guinea, Afoxe Loni and Stephane Belmondo. AMAZING African song and dance...This particular stage is on a peninsula, so that;s the sea both behind and in front of the stage, and a view of the citadel can be seen as well. The gentleman in red who dances briefly at the end has on a fez (one of those traditional African hats with a tassle) and the entire band keeps those swinging as they play their instruments- though you cant really make it out in the video. Its almost hypnotic!

Bamana lion masquerade
Duration : 212 Seconds

Outside Bamako, Mali, participants in a tour led by Jerry Vogel, Deputy Director of the Museum for African Art in New York, and Christraud Geary, Teele Curator of African and Oceanic Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, were welcomed into a small village. After an exchange of greetings and expressions of gratitude to Jerry for his sustained support of their school, a percussion ensemble struck up an ominous rhythm, and a lion mask entered the large circle. He was a powerful and animated figure indeed, at times heedless of his keeper, provoking fright, laughter, and wonder at the transmogrification of human/beast/spirit. Traditional Ceremony in Bafican - Casamance - Singing and dancing
Duration : 205 Seconds

Traditional celebration in Bafican - Becoming a man #1 The circumcision celebrations occur every 4 or 20 years. As one elder explained it, this ritual is important: no matter where you are in the world, you have to come back come back to your village for the initiation. For the first ceremony, children are taken to the sacred wood, shaved, washed with sacred water, initiated then come back to the village. For the second one, young men are taken out of the village, healed and initiated by an elder, taught how to become a man as well. Women are absolutely forbidden to go in certain places of the village which are reserved exclusively to men during this period. The celebration last for about a couple of weeks. Women and men dress up with this deep blue material, wear beads for the dancing. Des photos?! Please go to www.flickr.com then clic on Casamance
