Dununba feast in Conakry, Guinea. Dununba - a traditional "dance of strong men" is a group of dances and rhythms originating in Guinea. More precisely dununba comes from Malinke people living in upper Guinea. The dance and music culture in Upper Guinea is concentrated in bigger villages and cities which are the cultural capitals of their little regions. The most known are: Kouroussa, Hammanah, Baro, Koumana, city Kankan and region of Siguiri. In another part of Guinea there is also the Farannah village, which is very important for Malinke culture. Different sources claim that there are beetween 20 and 80 or even more dununba rhythms and dances. Most of them are traditionally performed only by men and boys. Many dunumba dances have their social place in Malinke society. There are many special occasions for them to be performed. Nowadays, dunumba rhythms are part of modern repertoire of percussions (percussion is just a group of drummers performing without dancers) and ballets (big groups of dancers and accompanying drummers). Dunumba is also a name for a drumming/dancing ceremony/party organised with no traditional social context in Conakry - the capital of Guinea. Most of the repertoir during these ceremonies are dundumba familly rhythms and dances. This movie presents this kind of a modern party in Matam, a district of Conakry. This documentary was produced as part of a cultural exchange between students in Madison, WI, and Kolomalila, a village on the border of Mali and Guinea, West Africa. The video highlights similarities and differences between the school experiences in both places.

Extract from beauty contest held at Baluan Island in December 2006 during the Balopa Cultural Festival. The purpose of this enormous festival - the largest in the history of the island - was to revive old cultural traditions, get the bored youth involved in meaningful activities and thereby possibly attract international tourism and money to the island. The video is part of a larger anthropological film project which deals with the ways Baluan people understand themselves, their culture and their possibilities in the new global reality. Apart from the extraordinary cultural performances the film focuses on several local debates, which evolved during the festival about what Baluan culture and tradition actually consists of and what it may and may not be used for.
