Colonial history of Papua New Guineans
Duration : 89 Seconds

A villager efficiently recounts the colonial history of Papua New Guinea. His comments are illustrated with archival stills. This must be one of the most concise histories ever in an interview covering an unbelievable litany of misadventure and the turbulent wake left behind by various colonising powers. The rule of the Germans was followed by the English, Japanese, Australians and then the Papua New Guineans themselves.

The Sharkcallers of Kontu (1982)
Duration : 214 Seconds

The Sharkcallers of Kontu depicts the ancient tradition of sharkcalling in the village of Kontu, on the remote west coast of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. There are only a few men remaining who use magic to call, trap and kill sharks by hand from their small outrigger canoes. Making this very old and extraordinary practice the spine of the film, the filmmaker also weaves in a compelling portrait of the daily life of the villagers. The Sharkcallers of Kontu explores the changes to cultural values and traditional customs wrought by colonisation, alcohol, commerce and Christianity. The film is beautifully shot in an observational style and makes memorable use of archival stills and interviews with villagers. Filmmaker Dennis ORourke narrates.

The Gospel according to the Papuans - Clip
Duration : 171 Seconds

With gentle irony, this film records the overlay of Christianity on native beliefs that occurs in the Huli tribe, one of seven hundred tribes living in Papua New Guinea. In many areas of the world where Christian missionaries have brought their message, similar confusions and misconceptions abound. Recently, two rival groups of missionaries appeared in Papua, one Catholic and the other Seventh Day Adventists, creating competition for conversions. In past years, other Christian churches like the Lutherans, Methodists and Apostolics had tried to convert the tribe, with varying degrees of success. When chief Ghini agrees to be baptized a Catholic after being bribed with a shirt and tie, a large proportion of the Hulis follow. But first there were heated debates comparing their ancient spiritual beliefs with the tenets of Catholicism. One man argues, « Missionaries only came here to stop our traditions they couldnt show me God or bring him to me. » Chief Ghini organizes the sacrificial slaughter of a pig, which is divided up among the soon-to-be baptized. The film builds to a great baptismal ceremony, revealing the divisions among the tribe created by competing missionaries. thomasbalmes.com

Christian missionaries destroy culture.
Duration : 285 Seconds

A striking example of how christianity destroys a proud culture, by introducing "doubt". The christian body is imperfect, we are "sinners". These beautifull people learn for the first time, that their behaviour is a "sin". A bigger psychological desastrous impact is the fictious idea of the christian afterlife, their current world is a place of sin, they are sinners, the "real life" will start in the afterlife. Makes me think what proud people we could be, if we could remove the christian doctrine of imperfectness of the body.

Cargo Cult, how gods and religions appear
Duration : 541 Seconds

A cargo cult is a type of religious practice that may appear in traditional tribal societies in the wake of interaction with technologically advanced, non-native cultures. The cults are focused on obtaining the material wealth of the advanced culture through magical thinking, religious rituals and practices, believing that the wealth was intended for them by their deities and ancestors. Following contact with people from more technically advanced societies through exploration, colonization, missionary efforts, and international warfare, cargo cults were initially documented in New Guinea and other Micronesian and Melanesian countries in the southwest Pacific Ocean.

we R guinea pigs... ;D
Duration : 182 Seconds

these last few days, I've been kinda of laughing at all the conspiracy theories that I had once held onto as if these were based on absolute truths. From aliens to the illuminati, from forces that conspired and worked to control the masses to the demons that religions purport that they are fighting, so as to win our souls, um...and thingies like this...I pretty much had a life filled with the encyclopedia of conspiracies. Until I discovered a bath soap that not only washes away most of the delusions of life, but that it actually really makes my skin smooth and not dry. But, um...that is a whole other story in and of itself. Enjoy my guinea pig video and do engage in a lightness of heart with it. I sure as heck did :D They are soooooooooooooooo cute!!! ;D
