Guinea worm disease is contracted through the consumption of drinking water that is contaminated with microscopic water fleas carrying infective larvae. The debilitating effects of Guinea worm disease include infections, ulcers and arthritis. These conditions prevent those who are infected from performing functions such as farming and caring for their children, literally halting community productivity. According to The Carter Center, through tireless public health efforts, Guinea worm is set to become only the second disease in human history after smallpox and the first parasitic disease to be eliminated from the world. It will be the first disease to be eradicated without the use of a vaccine or medical treatment. Worldwide cases of Guinea worm disease have already been reduced by more than 99 percent. In 1986, the disease afflicted an estimated 3.5 million people a year in 20 countries across Africa and Asia. May 2006 One of the most volatile and reclusive figures in PNG's recent history, Francis Ona has re-emerged from his mountain hideaway. Ona is the man who created the secessionist Bougainville Revolutionary Army, or BRA, in 1989 originally to fight against the operations of the Panguna mining company which Ona believed was destroying the land and environment, and paying little or no compensation to the owners of the land. The Panguna Mine - then the largest copper mine in the world - was closed, and remains closed today. The BRA fought a savage civil war for independence against the PNG government during the 1990s. As the last of a long line of notable Zoo managers before him, Rod Ingersoll revisits the once world renowned Baiyer River Wildlife Sanctuary also known as the Baiyer River Bird Sanctuary located in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea. As the Manager during 2000-2001 Rod only spent a year in the pristine wilderness however it was enough to fall in love with the country, wildlife, culture and people of Papua New Guinea. It was an extremely challenging task to resurrect the once famous zoo and walk in the footsteps of well published past managers like Sir Edward Hollstrom, Graham George and Dr. Roy Mackay. After he was driving out of town by warring tribes, Rod wasn't done with the place and still remained extremely passionate about the zoo. Travelling back in 2003 with camera in hand, risking his life with known civil unrest and tribal enemies Rod still decided to go back to the zoo and interview local village elders to gain their perspective on zoo history. Back in Australia Rod researched everything he could find on the zoo and met as many surviving past managers as possible to make this short 15min film to honour those who have contributed to local wildlife conservation, PNG tourism and to document a small piece of otherwise lost history. As Rod struggled to find film funding to make a feature length documentary Rod shelved the idea after a few long years of juggling a family, working full time and struggling to find funding. Now in Dec 2011 Rod has just reignited ...
