Sidiki Conde is a dancer, drummer, and singer from Guinea, West Africa, who despite losing the use of his legs when he was 14, followed his dream to become a dancer. With veterans of West Africas premier dance and musical ensembles including Ballets Africains and Les Merveilles dAfrique, Sidiki Conde founded Tokounou, named after his tribal village, in 1999. Through Tokounous song, dance and musical arrangements, Conde celebrates the traditional arts of Guinea and chronicles his unique journey as a person with a disability. Recently honored by the NEA as a National Heritage Fellow, Sidiki leads a mesmerizing performance that will thrill audiences with the power of the human spirit. Tokounou offers performances and workshops in traditional West African song and dance for adults and children of all ages and abilities.

Four Guinea piglets were born at Middleton Place in June. The piglets, three boars and one sow, have been fed by hand with milk from Annabelle, the brown Swiss cow. The piglets are among many heritage breeds in the living history Plantation Stableyards. Other historic livestock at Middleton Place include Gulf Coast sheep, Cashmere goats, River Water buffalo and Jersey cows, as well as Dominique and Rhode Island Red chickens.

Found a black snake in one of my quail cages. It had one quail in it's belly and had killed another ten. I threw it to our American Guinea Hogs for a little barnyard justice. AGH's are a heritage breed of livestock that were known to root out snakes, keeping the areas around the old farmsteads safe.

After being rebuked by the musicians and dancers in the village, Seny Touré wakes up to find Jeli Kocasale Diabate playing the koni softly at his side. As Kocasale gets up to leave, so moved by the music, Seny pleads with him to become his acolyte, even at the sacrifice of his jembe-playing endeavors. But Kocasale insists that Seny's jembe must not be left behind. This melody (beginning at 2:10) can be heard on Seny Touré's 2003 disc "Dunuya Mukolonma" (as Bimolu) as well as on the 1995 Les Ballets Africains disc "Heritage" (as Kolon Kalan.)
