| | 2007 Tolai Warwagira Festival Duration : 327 Seconds These are shots from the Final Tolai Warwagira festival to be held in Rabaul Town, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea. This festival of music and culture had been running in Rabaul for the previous 30 or so years until the twin volcanoes erupted in September of 1994 and demolished the town. In 2008, the festival was moved to Kokopo because of excessive ash fall in Rabaul and because new facilities were opened in Kokopo. I worked on the 2006 and 2007 festivals as the audio engineer and experienced first hand the peoples feelings of melancholy sadness on loosing the festival to Kokopo. After the twin volcanic eruptions of 1994, this festival was the only cultural and music event that kept the Rabaul Population entertained, occupied and gave a little bit of income and hope to their miserable situation. Rabaul was once called "the Jewel of the South Pacific". It was a beautiful and vibrant place. In the last night of the 2006 festival, there was heavy ash fall and the festival was washed out with rain, ash, mud and sulphur. No one went home. We all stayed. The kids danced on to the early morning dawn. It was an eerie out-of-this world moonscape. Unfortunately the sulphur and acid destroyed my gear and none of the shots were saved on this occasion. Luckily I saved the 2007 shots, most of which are unusable because of lighting problems. Those which came out OK are used in this slide presentation. If anyone would like a copy of the entire archive, leave a message and an ... | | Miss Balopa Queen Quest Duration : 245 Seconds Extract from beauty contest held at Baluan Island in December 2006 during the Balopa Cultural Festival. The purpose of this enormous festival - the largest in the history of the island - was to revive old cultural traditions, get the bored youth involved in meaningful activities and thereby possibly attract international tourism and money to the island. The video is part of a larger anthropological film project which deals with the ways Baluan people understand themselves, their culture and their possibilities in the new global reality. Apart from the extraordinary cultural performances the film focuses on several local debates, which evolved during the festival about what Baluan culture and tradition actually consists of and what it may and may not be used for. | | Orchestre de la Paillotte "Kadia Blues" (From Golden Afrique, Vol. 1) Duration : 301 Seconds The newly-independent state of Guinea, led by president Sékou Touré, established a number of music groups, competitions and festivals throughout the country to play the traditional musics of Guinea rather than the European styles that were popular in the colonial period. Orchestre de la Paillotte, lead by saxophonist Kélétigui Traoré, was born from the split, in 1960, of the Syli Orchestre National. Later, the group changed its name to Kélétigui et ses Tambourinis. | | BIKPELA BAGARAP (BIG DAMAGE) - Trailer Duration : 133 Seconds Bikpela Bagarap (Big Damage) reveals the human face of logging in Papua New Guinea. It is a tale of exploitation and broken promises, where local people are treated as second-rate citizens in their own country by Malaysian logging companies and corrupt politicians. Customary landowners are forced into signing documents they don't understand, for the promise of "development" -- fresh water, health and education, but these essential services are rarely provided. Instead, their traditional hunting grounds are destroyed, waterways polluted, and their way of life ruined forever.
