| | Harry Thomas Danvers - Guatemalan-art.com Duration : 179 Seconds HARRY THOMAS DANVERS did not begin his artistic career until he arrived in Guatemala in the early 70s. There he began to study drawing in the Escuela Nacionalde Artes Plasticas in Guatemala City. His teacher was Juan Antonio Franco, who in addition to have studied in Europe also worked on a lot of murals of Diego Rivera in Mexico. He had his first exhibition in Antigua, Guatemala in 1980 and has since continued to have exhibitions there in different galleries as well as Guatemala City. In the year 2000 he won the Arturo Martinez national art contest in landscape. The idea with the miniature paintings is to make something small seem large, always using the local environment as a backdrop with native people predominating to add to the movement. It should be alive and yet mysteriously so-due to the rare and ancient setting. There are two sets of paintings and they mark two periods of my artistic career. The larger paintings date from the year 1985 while the smaller ones are from the present year 2004. Harry speaks five languages, including Maya Kiche and is the founder and director of the English Club/International Language School. He is also a professor of English and Anthropology at the University of San Carlos in Quetzaltenago. He is the author of 11 novels, and 6 bilingual books. | | Carlos Chávez: Voices of the Land 2001-2002 Duration : 108 Seconds During the civil war in Guatemala, some people fled to Mexico and some people stayed behind. When the 1996 peace accord was signed and conditions changed, people began searching for clandestine graves and family members who had been abducted and murdered. In this series of paintings, Guatemalan painter, Carlos Chávez, conveys the sentiment that those who had died were calling out to their loved ones from the land, from their graves. They called out to assuage the pain and grief of their loved ones...to let them know they are resting in peace. | | Mayan Art (San Bartolo Mural) Duration : 82 Seconds San Bartolo is a pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site located in the Department of Petén in northern Guatemala, northeast of Tikal and roughly 50 miles from the nearest settlement. The Maya site includes an 85-foot pyramid named "Las Ventanas" (The windows), the Temple of "Las Pinturas" (The paintings), and an early royal tomb in the "Tigrillo Complex" (Ocelot Complex), and in the "Jabalí" (Wild Boar) group some 500 mt. to the east, from the central Plaza a triadic complex similar to the H group in Uaxactún and Tikal's North Acropolis. The pyramid was constructed from ca 300 BC its Discovery by A team led by William Saturno, a researcher for the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and a lecturer at Boston University and the University of New Hampshire[1], discovered a mural room in 2001 in the base of the pyramid. Excavation began in March 2003. These murals were carbon-dated as from 100 BC, which makes them, the oldest Maya murals discovered as of 2007[update].[citation needed] Karl Taube describes it as the Sistine Chapel of the Maya[citation needed]. These provide evidence that the Maya had full-fledged monarchies centuries earlier than previously thought. There also have been found the earliest painted glyphs known in the Maya area dating ca 350 BC. The tomb of an early Maya king was found 1.6 kilometres away to the west. It was uncovered beneath a small pyramid in 2005 by a team lead by archaeologist Monica Pellecer Alecio. This is from ca 150 BC, and is ... | | Claudia Tremblay - Canadian Artist - Illustrator Duration : 243 Seconds Claudia Tremblay - Canadian Artist/Illustrator www.claudiatremblay.com "Claudia was born in Amos, Québec. She traveled the world for some years in search of herself before returning home at the age of 24. She decided to stay for a while as her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She took advantage of her time in Montréal to study horticulture. The death of her mother coincided with her departure to Guatemala, where she was accepted to work with CECI, an NGO. Her work consisted of building medicinal gardens alongside Mayan refugees returning from Mexico after a long and deeply tragic civil war. She quickly realized she needed to paint these hard working women. While painting she felt aa relief from her mourning . It became a therapy and she began to paint every day. With no formal training in the visual arts, she tried day after day to capture their essence. Her paintings represent the melancholic souls and inner strength that motivates these women. She also likes to explore the universal connection between mother and child. She stayed in Guatemala for 12 years. She opened an art Gallery and established herself at the heart of regional culture. Her work was shown at countless exhibits throughout Central America. She would not have left, if it were not for the rising violence. She has now returned to Montréal with her Guatemalan born son. She still paints full time, women from around the world." © Images are copyright of their respective owners, assignees or ... | | "Maximón" The Mystery behind El Chaman Bar, Antigua Guatemala Duration : 150 Seconds The Mystery of the bar known as El Chaman in Antigua Guatemala remains untold. When you enter El Chaman, Maximón is with you, art on the walls, stories, legends, people, paintings. This is a special place for one that believes. This is the story of how Maximón is with us at El Chaman for all to experience. The legend has it that one day while the village men were off working in the fields, Maximón slept with all of their wives. When they returned, they became so enraged they cut off his arms and legs (this is why most effigies of Maximón are short, often without arms). Where Maximón is venerated, he is represented by an effigy which resides in a different house each year, being moved in a procession during Holy Week. During the rest of the year, devotees visit Maximón in his chosen residence, where his shrine is usually attended by two people from the representing Cofradia who keep the shrine in order and pass offerings from visitors to the effigy. Worshippers offer money, spirits and cigars or cigarettes to gain his favour in exchange for good health, good crops, and marriage counseling, amongst other favours. The effigy invariably has a lit cigarette or cigar in its mouth, and in some places, it will have a hole in its mouth to allow the attendants to give it spirits to drink. | | Elias Rivera Duration : 137 Seconds Title: ELIAS RIVERA Author: EDWARD LUCIE-SMITH Format: Hardback Details: During his long career, Elias Rivera has painted the human drama as it unfolds in settings as varied as civil rights demonstrations, subways, rodeos and the market places of Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. This long-awaited and lavishly illustrated monograph of the Santa Fe-based artist spans 40 years of his oeuvre. His paintings have a sense of the photographic, with the compositions' inhabitants captured mid-sentence, mid-stride or mid-gesture as the late afternoon sun casts light and shadow across the scene. Yet Rivera's brand of figuration, as Edward Lucie-Smith points out, plays a careful balancing act with abstraction. This, he argues, is what distinguishes the artist's masterful style. Rivera spent many years in New York, observing people in cafés and automats. A move to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and a trip to Guatemala in the 1980s brought a new dimension and vibrant palette to his work, establishing the Latin American paintings as his signature works. His often large-scale pictures leave viewers with the sense of actually having been there, as the artist skilfully allows us a glimpse of the everyday life of his subjects. Regardless of the particulars of culture, place and time that appear in each one, Elias Rivera consistently captures the very essence of humanity. 244 gigantic pages in dazzling colour with chronology.^ Published Price: £37.50 BIBLIOPHILE PRICE: £12.50 Tags :ELIAS RIVERA, art books, collectables, book reviews, bibliophilebooks, annie quigley
