Guatemala declares calamity as food crisis worsens - 15 Sep 09
Duration : 158 Seconds

A "state of calamity" has been declared in Guatemala, where about 54000 families are struggling to feed their children. A severe drought and a reduction in the amount of money sent back by people working overseas is being blamed for the crisis. Changing weather patterns and a slowdown in remittances sent from the US are being blamed for the situation. Al Jazeera's David Mercer visited the so-called Dry-Corridor in the eastern part of the country, Jalapa, and sent this report. This package contains images that may disturb or offend some viewers.

20091105 Tzu Chi battles food shortage in Guatemala.wmv
Duration : 111 Seconds

2009 has been a year of seemingly endless disasters. All forms of natural calamities have plagued areas around the world, including Central America which is in the grips of a severe drought. Considered one the worst dry spells for Guatemala in 30 years, the catastrophe has damaged crops, which has led to a food shortage crisis for 400000 families. Responding to the crisis, Tzu Chi volunteers went to Guatemala's department of Chiquimula launched an aid distribution supplying 800 rural households with corn, black beans, rice and other aid. Tzu Chi paves new road No matter how far of the road, Tzu Chi volunteers have never let anything halt them in their tracks, so even the high mountains of Olopa municipality near the border of Guatemala and neighboring Honduras do not stop them from fulfilling their humanitarian mission. A state of calamity over food supply This region in Central America, has been hit by the worst drought in 30 years. Lack of rain has caused serious food shortages for over 400000 families, and agitated the already major issue of malnutrition in children. During these bleak times, Tzu Chi volunteers have responded with emergency provisions. With help from the army, 800 families received corn, black beans, rice and other aid. Great generosity sows more blessingsGuatemala The supplies are a godsend and all the villagers can offer for now, is a simple yet sentimental poster expressing thanks. The gift is all the thanks the volunteers need.
