| | Maya Pedal Asociación, San Andrés Itzapa, Guatemala Duration : 164 Seconds In 1997, in San Andrés Itzapa in Guatemala, Maya Pedal Association began recycling scraps of bicycles into Bicimáquinas. Bicimáquinas are pedal-powered blenders, washing machines and threshing machines, eliminating the need for fuel and electricity. Pumps are also possible, and are capable of extracting 30 liters of water per minute from 30-meter deep wells (electronic pumps reach just to 12 meters). The idea of these ingenious contraptions emerged from the desire to help the farming families of the San Andrés community. The issue that gave rise to Maya Pedal was the expense and shortage of electricity and fuel in the village. Carlos and Cesar, creators of Maya Pedal, have achieved an extraordinary result: a worthy project that does not pollute and is extremely fascinating in its involvement of volunteers from around the world who are building a fantastic pedal revolution. | | Multiuse Bike Machine - Innovate or die competition Duration : 116 Seconds www.mayapedal.org This is my multiuse bike machine. Its functions include: -knife sharpener, to maintain farming equipment -grinder, for grinding coffee, grain, spices, or to make animal feed -corn degrainer to simplify and accelerate a necessary but time consuming task in processing corn -electric generator for off the grid lighting -blender to improve nutrition and add enable home based micro industry -water pump, capable of moving 5 gallons per minute The tools are mounted on tables which attach to a simple 3 point mounting system. The tool tables can be switched easily using only one tool. Changing attachments usually takes under 5 minutes. The design is simple yet versatile and I am still working on developing more attachments. Similar pedal powered machines have proved to be very useful to subsistence farmers in rural Guatemala. My design combines these 6 machines into one simple design, to streamline production and lower costs. While it is unlikely any one user will want all 6 tools, the machine provides more utility at a lower cost. All of the parts are locally available and it can be built and maintained with a minimal number of tools. Note: Please pardon the terrible video editing, it's my first attempt and embarrassingly bad. Women are becoming more active in the formal sector part of the economy (37% of women are employed). The average urban household size is 5.2 persons which is extremely high and has in turn caused a high poverty rate (27%). Rural to Urban Migration Guatemala City is the focal point of the entire developing economy of Guatemala, and thus is the largest city in the country. The country of Guatemala has one of the least populated urban areas in all of Latin America, but is steadily increasing and the urban growth rate in Guatemala City is 3.5%. Causes of Rural to Urban Migration The Civil War which lasted for 36 years heavily impacted the rural farming lands that were thrived upon for agriculture. They began farming less labor-intensive crops which prompted the rural residents to seek employment in urban areas. Declining demand and poor economy for agricultural products they export also led to more urban growth. Effects on Employment Due to these increases in urban growth, Guatemala has developed into the largest economy in the region with Guatemala City being the center point of the entire economy. With urban growth, most residents are ... Tags :Guatemala City, University Of Florida
