Nestled in the heart of Central America, just south of Mexico, is the country of Guatemala. Its varied landscapes and climates as well as the many Mayan ruins scattered throughout the country attract visitors every year. Tourists and collectors alike seek after the beautiful Guatemalan handicrafts such as clothing, pottery, and woodworking. Over half of the population of Guatemala is descended from the Mayan civilization and they speak 22 Mayan-based indigenous languages. Spain's conquest of Guatemala in 1532 introduced the Spanish language and culture, which is reflected in Guatemala's culture today. Guatemala's beautiful countryside belies a troubled political past. In 1996, the government signed a peace treaty ending a civil war that had been raging for 36 years. The end of the war signaled progress for the nation, but the effects of the war are still felt. Gang and organized crime violence and drug trafficking test the government and police control. Economically, more than half the population is living in poverty and over 40 percent of the children under the age of five are malnourished. Guatemala's profitable production of coffee, sugar, and bananas for export has contributed to less production of grains, which have to be imported for food. Catholicism, introduced by the Spanish and syncretized with Mayan religions, controls most religious life in Guatemala. This is the first segment from the film I shot in Guatemala for the Outdoor Education independent study. During a trip to Coban I interviewed a Guatemalan tour guide, & saw a children's riot (protest). During the 2 1/2 months I was there I kept a video journal part of which depicts my inspiration to pursue anthropology & archaeology. There are insights into the mayan culture, video footage of other travelers, and footage of the action packed adventures Guatemala has to offer including a tour of Semuc Champey. Tthis segment is an interlude into the Guatemalan culture.

The marimba is a large, wooden instrument from West Africa. Enslaved Africans carried the marimba tradition with them to Latin America, where it became an integral part of Latin American music, particularly in Guatemala. Traditional marimba music serves as a link between young Guatemalans living in the USA and Guatemalan culture. Carlos Mejía, a master marimba player, founded the group Ixchel in Chicago, Illinois, to teach youth about their culture and heritage through music. Katalina Trujillo and Víctor Zacbé Pichardo accompany Mejía as they perform traditional and contemporary marimba songs from Guatemala and Mexico. The Byam Caravan Club made several trips to Central America during the 1950s; this video shows actual footage of one of those trips which branched into Guatemala.
