Tikal Mayan Jungle Ruins - Guatemala
Duration : 321 Seconds

Tikal is the largest of the ancient ruined cities of the Mayan civilization. Now part of Guatemala's Tikal National Park, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Monumental architecture at the site dates to the 4th century BC. Tikal reached its apogee during the Classic Period, ca. 200 AD to 900 AD, during which time the site dominated the Maya region politically, economically, and militarily. The ruins lie on lowland rainforest. Regarding the fauna, agouti, coatis, gray foxes, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, Harpy Eagles, Falcons, ocellated turkeys, guans, toucans, green parrots and leaf-cutting ants can be seen there regularly. Jaguars Jaguarundis and Cougars are also said to roam in the park. There are thousands of ancient structures at Tikal and only a fraction of these have been excavated after decades of archaeological work. The most prominent surviving buildings include six very large Mesoamerican step pyramids, labeled Temples I - VI, each of which support a temple structure on their summits. Some of these pyramids are over 60 meters high (200 feet). Temple I (also known as the Temple of Ah Cacao or Temple of the Great Jaguar) was built around CE 695. Tikal was a dominating influence in the southern Maya lowlands throughout most of the Early Classic. The site, however, was often at war and inscriptions tell of alliances and conflict with other Maya states, including Uaxactun, Caracol, Dos Pilas, Naranjo, and Calakmul. The site was defeated at the end of the Early ...

Plunder - Guatemala
Duration : 341 Seconds

January 1990 See full film at: journeyman.booserver.com The Mayans were the most civilised people of ancient America. Yet their most famous mystery still remains. As treasure hunters desecrate the ruins of ancient Mayan sites, the race is on to find out why the Mayans deserted their cities thousands of years ago. In the jungles of northern Guatemala a war is raging. On one side are the archaeologists and governments who aim to preserve the history of ancient temples, and on the other side are the grave robbers and art dealers, who profit from its destruction. Some looters find an ancient Mayan temple, unknown and unmapped. And as they break it apart brick-by-brick, the history of the people who once lived there is lost forever. Though profitable, looting is a dangerous job and skulls tied to tree trunks in this area act as a warning. For archaeologists, the blame lies with the dealers and art collectors. In New York auction houses, Mayan history can fetch a million dollars and looters can get a years wages from a single vase. As one man explains, Serious collecting is a disease. But the collectors love is greater than the archaeologists, who only care for history not for the object. The dealers insist that they are rescuing the works of art. If Peru cannot take care of its national treasures, the rest of the world will. As this battle between art collectors and historians persists, the jungle and its secrets continue to disappear before our very eyes.

0109 #02 Guatemala Discovery
Duration : 143 Seconds

Archeologists in Guatemala recently announced that they have discovered a sculpture titled "The Carrier of the Ancestor" at the archaeological site of Tak'alik Ab'aj. They say the sculpture shows the Olmecs were protagonists when the early Mayan culture was flourishing during 200 BC - 150 AC. Archaeologists said the discovery proves the Mayans shared architectural characteristics, religious beliefs and a writing system with the Olmecs - a missing link which didn't show in previous excavation.

Mayan Mystery - The Maya of Mexico
Duration : 649 Seconds

DVD-Download: hilaroad.com - A chance to take part in some amateur archaeology. This video presents theories about the meaning of a symbol on a Mayan temple at Tulum near Cancun. I believe this symbol and temple relate to Mayan observations of the stars, others have suggested the temple is an ancient lighthouse, or a sacrificial center, even that the symbol is related to Dan Brown's story the DaVinci Code! Collecting Ancient Central America:: Museums, Explorers, & Archaeologists in Pursuit of the Past
Duration : 5927 Seconds

Starting in the late 19th century, travelers, amateur scientists, businessmen, politicians, and later, professional archaeologists returned from Central America with never-before-seen artifacts. Many of these ceramic, stone, gold, and jade objects ended up in museums and many entered private collections. Regardless of their final destination, these early collections have helped, and continue to help, define a unique and unparalleled ancient history of Central America. This symposium delves into this history by looking at both early antiquarians and more recent scholarly approaches to collecting and understanding the past. It focuses on individuals, institutions, and the social and political factors that have impacted the collecting of objects from Belize and Guatemala in the north, down to Panama in the south. By extension, this conversation is also about understanding the history of archaeology, the history of museum building, and how we construct the past. Featured scholars include Dr. John Hoopes (University of Kansas), Dr. Francisco Corrales (National Museum of Costa Rica), Dr. Rosemary Joyce (University of California, Berkeley), Luis Sánchez (Department of Environmental Management, Costa Rican Institute of Electricity), Dr. James Snead (California State University Northridge), Dr. Elin Danien (University of Pennsylvania), and Dr. Alexander Benitez (George Mason University).
