Religion is very much a part of life here in Guatemala. Ancient churches...functional and ruins...are everywhere. There's a mixture of Catholic tradition with the old religion of the Maya. It is perfectly normal to see statues of saints alongside likenesses of less-saintly Mayan deities (my favorite is Maximon, to whom they offer cigars and alcohol. He looks a bit like Hemingway). I noticed that something was up this week when I noticed people walking around town with the sign of the cross on their foreheads. It was Ash Wednesday! I don't know much about this tradition other than it means that Easter is around the corner. When I lived in Philadelphia, many of my Catholic coworkers would get up early in the morning for Mass. They'd get the mark on their foreheads and wear it all day. It was all that I could do to keep from licking my thumbs and rubbing the smudge marks off their faces! At least the people here in Antigua have the good sense to get the ash-head marks after work! Anyway, Miguel and I went shopping in the morning for new chairs. We enjoy sitting on the roof of our Guatehouse and watch the world go by. The chairs that Kimberly relocated from the courtyard were weathered, and both of them were split. Getting a bit of arm fat pinched between the broken arms of a plastic chair is quite painful! Time for new chairs! Miguel bought a blue one, and mine is green. We had to carry them from one end of Antigua to the other! I wanted to get a taxi to haul the chairs, but ...

On September 19, 2001 four major earthquakes hit the city of Santa Rosa, Guatemala and today the land continued to shake. Two other earthquakes struck today with a magnitude of 4.3 and 4.6, respectively. Guatemala is experiencing these calamities as consequence of daring to come up against the living God, Jose Luis De Jesus, as they prohibited Him entry into the nation. The Man Christ Jesus warned President Colom not to fornicate with the Great Whore - the Vatican - to deny His entry but he chose not to listen. Instead, government officials issued a warning to not allow him into the nation as His message uncovers the lies and crimes of religion. The Man Christ Jesus is unmasking the corrupt the religious system that has kept the nations in ignorance and slavery and is ending the 2000 year old game that religion has had in using His name in vain to gain profits. But their time is up, the Man Christ Jesus is here to end all that as the prophecies foretold this would take place. There is only 284 days or less before His Transformation into His immortal body to reign over all the nations and restore order. Today, they are witnessing just retribution and the words of the Man Christ Jesus are being fulfilled. His angels execute and the Lord can not be mocked. As Catholocism began to merge with the Maya culture and religion, many of the towns in Guatemala were renamed after a different Saint. Panajachel became 'San Francisco de Panajachel.' Saint Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of Pana. Over 300 towns have 'ferias' or festivals to celebrate the Saint who watches over their town, each with a different character. Some of the festivities in Panajachel's feria include parade processions of the statues of St. Francis and his helper saints. Most of these processions, along with folkloric dances, concerts, performances, and other religious ceremonies are held in the plaza directly in front of the Catholic church. Along with the religious aspect, there are many other activities to celebrate during the festival. There are rides, fireworks, sporting events, dances, parties, and a beauty contest, which are very popular among the Guatemalan people. They beauty contestants are judged on not only their beauty, but their knowledge of Guatemalan culture and Mayan traditions.
