Guatemalan Foundation - Video #2 - History - Part 1 1958-1981
Duration : 751 Seconds

www.guatemalanfoundation.org This narrated slide show describes the history of the Guatemalan Foundation from 1958 when the idea was born down to 1981 when the Guerrilla War in Guatemala made necessary major shifts to keep the charitable work going among the Mayan indigenous people. This includes what was known for a time as "The Andersen Family Private Peace Corp," followed by a series of miraculous events to really jump start the effort with Dr. Ariel and Ines Andersen organizing the Foundation. The continual efforts to treat the sick and dieing, and the educational efforts to bring about permanent solutions are reviewed, along with the vocational education program all contributing to the Valparaiso Plantation becoming known as The Center for Indian Development--The CID. The Garifuna of Guatemala
Duration : 210 Seconds

The story behind this video starts on the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent. In 1635, two slave ships wrecked there and the African slaves escaped to freedom. They mixed in with the native Caribs, giving birth to a new Afro-Caribbean culture - the Garifuna (Gareefoonah). In the centuries since, the Garifuna migrated and founded villages along the Caribbean coast of Central America. Lonny Shavelson reports from Guatemala. Guatemalas top human rights official has declared that the victims of one of the most shocking massacres in its countrys history will be paid $3 million to compensate for their suffering in Dos Erres in 1982, where more than 200 villagers were killed by a special forces unit whose commanders were trained by the United States military.

Guatemala After the War
Duration : 118 Seconds

uzonphoto.com uzonreport.com These are recent crimes. You can still see fear in these faces. Its hard to believe that the genocide in Guatemala happened just over 20 years ago. There are almost no photos of it. Guatemalas tragedy doesnt have the place it merits in the history of infamy perhaps for this reason: there are no photos. Or there arent many, if we take into account the images James Natchwey, Jean-Marie Simon or Alon Reininger, along with a few others, made of Guatemala in the 1970s and 1980s. In any case, what was happening in Guatemala at that time faded into the background of the story of the triumph and eventual electoral defeat of the Sandinista regime in Nicaragua, or the war in El Salvador. The signing of peace treaties on December 29, 1996 opened a space in Guatemalan society for slowly discovering the sad legacy of 36 years of armed conflict. Less than two years later, on April 26, 1998, Bishop Juan Gerardi was murdered two days after presenting a report on the human rights violations that had taken place during the war. These dates opened and shut a particular moment of history in Guatemala, cutting short the debate on the origins of and responsibilities for a conflict that left more than 200000 victims, most of them Mayan. Today, when the dead come from a place that we didnt know existed until a few months ago, its prudent to remember that the Cold War in Latin America was red hot. These photos are dedicated to Guatemalan journalist Ricardo Miranda ...

Guatemalans celebrate 'Day of the Dead' by flying kites
Duration : 136 Seconds

Guatemala's 'Day of the Dead' celebration took to the air when Mayan Indians recalled an ancient tradition of flying enormous kites to communicate with their departed loved ones. Each year, Guatemalans observe numerous traditions to commemorate the dead. But in addition to the usual graveside observances, Guatemalans have another, infinitely more colourful tradition that involves flying enormous kites over the graves in an attempt to communicate with the dead. This Mayan tradition began in ancient times is still followed. The kites are constructed out of bamboo, cloth, paper and wire. These days, kite-fliers also use more modern materials. www.itnsouce.com Reuters RTV1557505

Plunder - Guatemala
Duration : 341 Seconds

January 1990 See full film at: journeyman.booserver.com The Mayans were the most civilised people of ancient America. Yet their most famous mystery still remains. As treasure hunters desecrate the ruins of ancient Mayan sites, the race is on to find out why the Mayans deserted their cities thousands of years ago. In the jungles of northern Guatemala a war is raging. On one side are the archaeologists and governments who aim to preserve the history of ancient temples, and on the other side are the grave robbers and art dealers, who profit from its destruction. Some looters find an ancient Mayan temple, unknown and unmapped. And as they break it apart brick-by-brick, the history of the people who once lived there is lost forever. Though profitable, looting is a dangerous job and skulls tied to tree trunks in this area act as a warning. For archaeologists, the blame lies with the dealers and art collectors. In New York auction houses, Mayan history can fetch a million dollars and looters can get a years wages from a single vase. As one man explains, Serious collecting is a disease. But the collectors love is greater than the archaeologists, who only care for history not for the object. The dealers insist that they are rescuing the works of art. If Peru cannot take care of its national treasures, the rest of the world will. As this battle between art collectors and historians persists, the jungle and its secrets continue to disappear before our very eyes.

1954 CIA USA vs Guatemala from: THE CENTURY OF THE SELF(BBC)
Duration : 552 Seconds

Adam Curtis' acclaimed series examines the rise of the all-consuming self against the backdrop of the Freud dynasty. To many in both politics and business, the triumph of the self is the ultimate expression of democracy, where power has finally moved to the people. Certainly the people may feel they are in charge, but are they really? The Century of the Self tells the untold and sometimes controversial story of the growth of the mass-consumer society in Britain and the United States. How was the all-consuming self created, by whom, and in whose interests? The Freud dynasty is at the heart of this compelling social history. Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis; Edward Bernays, who invented public relations; Anna Freud, Sigmund's devoted daughter; and present-day PR guru and Sigmund's great grandson, Matthew Freud. Sigmund Freud's work into the bubbling and murky world of the subconscious changed the world. By introducing a technique to probe the unconscious mind, Freud provided useful tools for understanding the secret desires of the masses. Unwittingly, his work served as the precursor to a world full of political spin doctors, marketing moguls, and society's belief that the pursuit of satisfaction and happiness is man's ultimate goal.
