It is no wonder that Spanish poet and dramatist Federico García Lorca had yearnings to be a visual artist considering the vivid imagery that saturates his writing. While he began by doodling caricatures of his professors and friends at school in Granada, García Lorca drew throughout his life, exploring new ideas and illustrating his own dramatic works and prose. Most of his drawings span several distinct periods in his life including: the times surrounding his compelling, complicated and veiled liaison with Salvador Dalí; while García Lorca was studying and writing in New York; and later while living in Buenos Aires. While in Argentina, he focused more intently on his illustration and original drawings, rather than writing. He worked on collaborations for Pablo Neruda. In 1926, García Lorca even exhibited his art work at the Dalman Galleries in Barcelona with the help of Dalí and critic Sebastía Gasch. His drawings were published in various newspapers and in his own magazine "Gallo" throughout his career. This selection of drawings and paintings made by García Lorca, while not necessarily serious efforts, do indeed demonstrate his more intimate and spontaneous thoughts, as well as recurring symbols and motifs in both language and line. Perhaps such scribbles allow us even greater insight into his writings. One of Israel's greatest heroes, Joseph, rose to power in Egypt. Pharaoh honored him with a Gentile bride, daughter of the high priest of On, the city traditionally called Heliopolis. Her name was Asenath, and she married Joseph. In time, she became the mother of Ephraim and Manasseh. But as an Egyptian priest's daughter with a name dedicated to an idol, she also represents one of the Bible's greatest symbols. In fact, her name is a biblical archetype, the spirit and meaning of which remains alive and well to this day. Historically, it appears in a variety of different guises, but the image she represents is universal, and is venerated in statuary, paintings and literature. Rescued from devotion to an occult priesthood by her union with Joseph, she symbolizes a secret doctrine, and its ultimate defeat by Christ. April 9, 2010 This movie is part of a project I am making called "Desperately Seeking Zenyatta" (link: www.facebook.com It details my vacation to Hot Springs, Arkansas to see the Apple Blossom and Arkansas Derby horse races. I have been following and photographing the undefeated champion mare as she prepares for a bid to tie Citation and Cigar's unbeaten 16 win streak. I am an artist and aspiring fiction and turf writer. I use my pictures as inspiration for drawings, paintings, and stories. I have been making art and writing stories since I was old enough to hold a pencil, and have been following horse racing for nearly as long. I grew up in the Louisville, KY area and the Kentucky Derby was a major event. I love all types of horses and horse sports, but Thoroughbred racing is my favorite. Zenyatta is my favorite horse still racing; other favorites are Ruffian, Forego, and Kelso.
