Footage of Amtrak's City Of New Orleans seen in 1994 just before and after the train set converted from single level heritage passenger equipment to superliners. The approximate time these clips were recorded and when the transition took place was about Winter 1994 (Jan-Mar). Highlights The Last Night of pure heritage equipment 00:00 Amtrak #58 arrives into Central Station with P40DC 809. Our friends Anita and Carlin were taking the train north to Chicago that night. 01:38 My uncle Ed, cousin Travis, and myself make a cameo appearance next to 809. I'm the little kid my uncle is holding. 01:42 The same night, we catch train 58 departing north by the Memphis Pyramid. (Awesome horn sequence) 1st Morning: The foreshadow. 02:52 On another morning we catch train 59 heading south at the Memphis Pyramid again. This time it had a dead-head high-level dining car on the front. This was the foreshadow of what was to come for this train. (Engineer does a quick Shave and a haircut horn salute when blowing at our grade crossing.) Engines 826 & 806. 04:07 We beat train 59 to Central Station. Also catch a shot of a coal train crossing the diamond. My dad brought my baby brother, sister, and myself to watch the train. My sister was not happy at all! 06:07 We catch train 59 again at E. Belz Rd. on Illinois Central's Grenada District. (Another great horn sequence) 07:05 We barely catch train 59 again for the last time at E. Holmes Rd in the Memphis Suburbs. Amtrak's City of New Orleans seen in mid 1994 at Stateline road, Southaven Mississippi. Train 59 was recorded by my father, Arthur Davis. Dad brought my sister, brother, and myself along. You can hear the suprise in my voice calling the F40 'the old engine'. Engineer does a good job quilling that horn. Grenada Creole Society performs their song at The Grenville Independence Extravaganza - 2010. It is a bilingual composition - English & Creole French. It exhorts the large crowd of Grenadians celebrating their independence to speak the language of their ancestors which used to be generally spoken, but which is now in decline. Using Afro-Caribbeam rythyms, drums and steel pan tones, it mentions that St. Lucia, Dominica, Martinique and Guadeloupe still speak the language.

During the Fall of 1993 my dad (Arthur Davis) was able to record Amtrak's City of New Orleans with its brand new Genesis P40DC locomotives. These units were numbered between 800-843. The locomotives were first delivered to Amtrak between April-December 1993. At the time of this recording, the City of New Orleans still had heritage car equipment and still ran on Illinois Central's Grenada Sub. Some of the actual dates of recording I am unaware of, but in general, footage was recorded mostly in the Fall of 1993. All footage was of the the southbound train #59. Feel free to look up the addresses to find the actual locations the recordings were made. Highlights: 1st Morning 00:06 IC Grenada Sub: 870 E. Holmes Rd. Memphis TN. Engine 805. 3 vista domes. A deadhead diner car. 2nd Morning: September 4, 1993 00:42 Downtown Memphis; N. Riverside Dr. & Jefferson Ave. Engine 818. Engineer gives us a horn salute. Sleeper "Pine Dawn" 01:55 Train arrives into Memphis Central Station 02:52 Catchup with 818 on Interstate 55, just north of Coldwater Mississippi 3rd Morning 03:00 IC Grenada Sub: 2220 State Line Rd W. Southhaven Mississippi Engine # unknown 4th Morning: October 24, 1993 03:40 Memphis Central Station Engine 825. Sleeper "Magnolia Grove." *Note the guy driving the forklift is my dad's friend Andy. May 2, 1993 Amtrak's southbound City of New Orleans [#59] was led by F40PH #350 & GP40 #650. At the time of the recording, the train was still using heritage car equipment. Highlights: 00:00 Central Station. Memphis TN 00:22 Private car on a side track 00:52 #59 departs the station 02:28 We catchup to #59 at 721 E. Shelby Dr. Memphis TN on the Grenada District. Note that the engineer does not release the full amount of air pressure into the K5LA air-horn, making it sound different. There was nothing wrong with the horn. Extra Note: The kid you hear in the background is me. Also, I am aware that I miss counted the amount of cars on the train. I said 10 in the clip, but the consist only had 9 cars. Oops, just a child, have mercy. Last 2 sleeping cars were "Magnolia Grove" & "Pine Grove."
