Limnos with one of the prettiest harbors in Greece, beautiful beaches and picturesque, traditional villages untouched by modern-day tourism, hardly fits with any Greek Island stereotypes. Our good friends John and Claudia invited us over to stay at their summer house for 10 days. How could we say no? They are the best cooks we know. The island is composed primarily of granite. It has little natural fresh water and relies on the desalination of sea water in order to meet its needs. There are 9320 inhabitants (2001) most of whom live in the largest town, Mykonos, also known as Chora (ie the Town in Greek, a common denomination in Greece when the name of the island itself is the same as the name of the principal town), which lies on the west coast. Imerovigli is a traditional village and it is the extension of Fira but is situated on a higher cliff. The name comes from the word "vigla" which means "day". In front of the village is located an enormous rock called Skaros. Until 1800, Skaros was part of the land and had a castle on it where all the administrative offices of the island were located. The village was almost totally destroyed with the earthquake of 1956, and the cliff-edge houses were abandoned but a tourist trade started up again in the 1970s. Today Imerovigli is a beautiful and quiet village and also one of the top areas in Greece for accommodation!

Athens was an interesting city. At first we were a bit shocked, but once we got exploring, the history and ruins were so fascinating! We had AMAZING chicken Souvlaki and Lamb shanks at a restaurant called Karafakia. (Seriously you gotta go there!) We also climbed the Acropolis to the Parthenon and the view took our breath away! In Greece clashes broke out in central Athens between rival groups of protesters during the second day of mass demonstrations against a new round of austerity measures being debated in parliament. Authorities say one person died, while dozens were injured as more than 50 thousands demonstrators gathered in the city's main square outside parliament. RT's Sara firth reports from Athens. The modern prefecture (Νομός Μαγνησίας) was created in 1947 out of the Larissa prefecture. About 70% of the population live in the Greater Volos area which is the second-largest city in Thessaly and the third busiest commercial port in Greece. Much of the population lives near the Pagasetic Gulf and in the eastern part. The chemical element, Magnesium, was named after the "City of Magnesia" by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1808 The capital of Magnesia prefecture is the metropolitan city of Volos. According to the most recent census (2001), the population stands at 207000. The prefecture of Magnesia includes the Northern Sporades group of islands (Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos.
