GREEK POEM PORTOKALENIA BY ODYSSEUS ELYTIS
Duration : 83 Seconds

"for his poetry, which, against the background of Greek tradition, depicts with sensuous strength and intellectual clear-sightedness modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness" THE ORANGE GIRL She became so intoxicated by the sun's juice That she bowed her head and consented Slowly slowly to become: the little Orange Girl ! And so while the seven skies glittered with blue And so while the crystals touched a fire And so while swallow-tails flashed Angels above were bewildered and girls below Storks above were bewildered and peacocks below And all gathered together and saw her together And all together called her: the little Orange Girl ! Vineshoots and scorpions reel drunkenly the whole world is drunk But the sting of dawn will not leave pain alone The dwarf heron says it amid the earthworms The drip-drop of water says it amid golden moments And the dew says it to the lips of the good North Wind: Get up O small small small Orange Girl ! No one knows you as the kiss knows you Nor does the laughing god know you Who with his hand open to the flaming glare of the sun Exposes you naked before his thirty-two winds Odysseus Elytis, recipient of the 1979 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born to a wealthy family in Iraklion, Crete. His original name was Odysseus Alepoudhelis. He used the pseudonym to distinguish his writing from the family soap manufaturing business. He attended the University of Athens School of Law, but he dropped out to pursue his literary career. He ...

Greek people need our support - YouTube
Duration : 360 Seconds

I'm so sick of the Greek people being put down for the economic mess in the Eurozone. The countries of the Eurozone were not created equal, and anyone should have seen that there were going to be hurdles to overcome and even that inequality in economy, is just a fact of life. The Greeks are getting hammered now for being 'lazy' and other derogatory remarks are thrown out without a hint of what the Greeks have contributed to our world and society. Ancient Greek society placed considerable emphasis upon literature. Many authors consider the western literary tradition to have begun with the epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey, which remain giants in the literary canon for their skillful and vivid depictions of war and peace, honor and disgrace, love and hatred. Notable among later Greek poets was Sappho, who defined, in many ways, lyric poetry as a genre. A playwright named Aeschylus changed Western literature forever when he introduced the ideas of dialogue and interacting characters to playwriting. In doing so, he essentially invented "drama": his Oresteia trilogy of plays is seen as his crowning achievement. Other refiners of playwriting were Sophocles and Euripides. Sophocles is credited with skillfully developing irony as a literary technique, most famously in his play Oedipus the King. Euripedes, conversely, used plays to challenge societal norms and mores—a hallmark of much of Western literature for the next 2300 years and beyond—and his works such as Medea, The ...

Dr. Gazmend Kapllani - Being Greek and Albanian: The "No Man's Land" of a Double Identity...
Duration : 5284 Seconds

"Dr. Gazmend Kapllani - Being Greek and Albanian: The "No Man's Land" of a Double Identity in the Balkans" Through his work as a journalist and author, Dr. Gazmend Kapllani has been an advocate for human rights, fairness, and diversity. His writing -- which also includes book chapters, journal articles and poetry -- reveals Greece's growing social turmoil, a hornet's nest of economic crisis, political disillusionment, and an influx of migrants and refugees from South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. As Kapka Kassabova writes in the Guardian, "Kapllani brings borders closer to home and ruffles our notions of 21st-century Europe and the price some pay to live in it." By exploring deep-rooted preconceptions about movement and migration in Europe and beyond, Kapllani alerts his readers to the multiple borders -- both physical and psychological -- that divide today's supposedly open and inter-connected world. Co-sponsored by the Southeastern Europe Study Group, Center for European Studies, and the Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe on November 9th, 2011. LittleBigPlanet 2 - Snooty Literary Theater Presents: Greek Mythology!
Duration : 196 Seconds

lbp.me Butaneflame brings us classic comedy in the form of a LittleBigMockumentary, where we explore the facts and truths of Greek history. As a comedian myself, I can honestly say this is highly commendable work -- it's well written, beautifully transferred from script to level, and has some great moments. Half the level is here for you to watch; the other half is for you to watch in-game! NOTE: This video is 100% accurate -- if it wasn't true, they wouldn't be allowed to put it on the Internet! Besides, I was there when this all went down.
