Natural farming is a farming method that does not use fertilizers, the soil is not tilled, pesticides, weed removal, and chemical weed killers are not used. The founder of natural farming farmer, philosopher, and former plant pathologist, Masanobu Fukuoka, has also called this farming method, "do nothing farming" For information contact Panos Manikis at: natural farming center 011-30-23810-27312 during the 19:00 to 21:00 hours Klisohori, municipality of Edessa in Greece 2nd Km of the road Edessa-Aridea (Across from the nursing home) panagiotismanikis@gmail.com cinematographer lookas koohtin koohtin@gmail.com

Riot dog drinks milk spilled by Greek dairy farmers
Duration : 223 Seconds

Greek dairy farmers handed out thousands of bottles of free milk in downtown Athens on Monday, April 6, 2009. About 100 farmers stood by Syntagma Square and handed out bottles to surprised motorists and pedestrians. The farmers argue that they are paid about 0.30 cents per litre of milk while the supermarket charges 2 euros. They blame the cartel system for shortchanging farmers and overcharching consumers. Greek milk prices are among the highest in the European Union.

Fukuoka in Greece (1/3)
Duration : 580 Seconds

www.permacultureplanet.com Follow Japanese legend Masanobu Fukuoka on his 1998 visit to Arnissa in Greece, where he inspires locals young and old in an effort to sow seedballs across 10000 hectares of rocky Grecian countryside. Masanobu Fukuoka, who died in 2008 aged 95, is the author of 'The One Straw Revolution', 'The Road back to Nature', and 'The Natural Way of Farming'. He was a pioneer of no-till cultivation, and his Natural Farming system is often referred to as The Fukuoka Method. From the age of 25 he devoted his life to this organic method, which does not require weeding, pesticide or fertiliser. The essence of Fukuoka's method is to reproduce natural conditions as closely as possible, maintaining great emphasis on diversity. Fukuoka re-introduced the ancient technique of 'seed balls', in which a variety of companion plant seeds are mixed together with clay and compost, resulting in a dense crop of smaller but highly productive strong plants. Fish Farms in Greece Boom but then Falter
Duration : 288 Seconds

I made this film in 1996. Thanks to financial aid and technology transfers from the European Union, fish farming burgeoned into a boom industry in Greece in the 1990s; but then supply of bass and bream outstripped demand, so to protect other Mediterranean producers, the EU imposed quotas.

GreekFoodTv☼ Citrus season at a Greek farmers market
Duration : 33 Seconds

Greek Citrus Fruits at the Market are a feast for the senses. Greece is a major producer of citrus fruits and exports globally. Most citrus fruits are grown in the Peloponnese and in Crete. One of the most beautiful sights of the temperate Greek winter is to be had driving south along the sea, near Epidavros, on the Old National Road, toward Nafplion. Snow-capped mountains frame the backdrop and bright orange, lemon and tangerine trees perfume the air. Sometimes there is a surplus and you can even see goats munching on the fruits. While oranges, in many varieites, and lemons make up the bulk of the Greek citrus production, the country also grows kumquats, mainly in Corfu, and bergamots, a gangly, oily-skinned thick fruit that gives Earl Grey tea its characteristic flavor and makes for one of the loveliest spoon sweets. About one-third of the Greek orange crop ends up in vitamin-C starved Germany, where it is processed into juice (and often sold back to the Greeks. God Bless food efficiency!! Austria, Poland, and the Czech Republic are also important markets for Greek citrus fruits. Many older varieties have been lost as the citrus-farming industry standardizes varieties, shapes, sizes, and color in the fruit that is produced.

Greek Fires of 2007: A Farmer's Misery
Duration : 554 Seconds

This story centers around the loss of livestock, the efforts by independent animal welfare organizations to bring food and medical aid to surviving animals, and why most farmers had no recourse when it came to recouping their losses. In Greece, to receive compensation for agricultural losses, farms must be recognized by the European Union and farmers must register their livestock with ELGA, the insurance company through which all producers of agricultural products must go. Farming is the livelihood for many citizens of Greece, whether they have 200 animals or twenty. However, ELGA insures a farmer only if he has a certain amount of animals, at least two units, where one unit is equal to eight animals. This system thereby rules out any farmer who has less than 16 animals, which is a majority of the farmers in Greece. These farmers don't have the option to register their animals, and therefore have nowhere to turn when tragedy strikes, as in the case of the 2007 fires. Although these farmers rely on their animals for their livelihood, they are simply considered "recreational farmers", unworthy of governmental assistance. The research and interviews I conducted on this topic illuminate the Greek government's oversight when it came to organizing governmental aid for farmers and their livestock after the 2007 fires, and the inconsistencies in making sure that all eligible farmers are insured and registered with ELGA.

GLOBAL 3000 | Cotton Crisis -- Greece and Global Competition
Duration : 341 Seconds

For now, Greece is the only European country among the world's top ten cotton producers. But it's feeling the pressure of globalisation. EU subsidies have been shrinking, while protective tariffs and import restrictions on cotton and textiles have been lifted in response to pressure from developing countriues and emerging economies. It's good news for countries such as Egypt, which can produce cotton cheaply, and also the US. As the world's leader cotton producer, its cotton farmers rely on generous subsidies -- which keep its prices low on world markets. But Greece is losing out -- and an ancient tradition is dying out. Particualrly hard-hit is Thessalia, where thousands of families live from cotton farming.

Greek islands feel pinch of debt crisis
Duration : 127 Seconds

The Greek debt crisis has far reaching consequences and it's not just the cities and the commercial centres, but far off islands are also feeling the pinch. Greek Island of Aegina, famous for its pistachio farming, is struggling as production continues to dwindle. Members of co-operatives have come down from 600 to 230, and this year sales are down so payouts are much lower. Amid the hardship, a German suggestion to sell off Greek islands to pay off the debts has angered the residents and farmers in this picturesque island. Al Jazeera's Tim Friend reports from Aegina.
