Their government just seem not to care, and as one Greek friend said, they dont bother about their own people and the elderly, so why would they care about animals. There are a many decent greek people trying to help, but they openly admit, they are in the minority, a good majority are in denial and the rest are just cruel thugs, not like the greeks we read about in history books at school. I do applaud those greeks that are doing what they can to try and stop this cruelty and I feel sorry that they admit they are shameful. The one's who are in denial, simply throw out the old chestnut, well it is not just our country. But "our country" has been in the EU for 27 years, flout more EU regulations than any other, and have the worst record per capita for animal abuse in Europe. Greece is not an impoverished country, and claws in millions of tourist euro. Hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs have been destroyed,noticably prior to the Athens Olympics in 2004. PETA and WSPA tried to get involved prior to this, but the with greek attitude about humane euthanasia (they prefer poisoning) and their backward attitude towards neutering programs, talks fell apart. Compassion in World Farming's investigation tracked five overcrowded lorry-loads of sheep being transported from Romania to Greece. The dog featured in the footage was found in this terrible condition, on the afternoon of July 15th, on the island of Poros, Greece. The dog in question was Leo. A happy and social stray, very well known to the people of Poros. Leo was doused with sulphuric acid and the culprits are still roaming free! It happens just a few days after a dog was skewered and hung in a village square in Crete. This new deplorable incident, that causes rage and indignation, reveals for the umpteenth time the indifference of the responsible authorities towards animals. The public prosecutor failed to act and the police were satisfied merely to look at severely mistreated animal. "I will never forget what I saw as long as I live. The poor animal trembled and cried without stop. They had doused both his body and face with strong chemicals ",Eleni Vikou told "E". She and her husband gave first aid to the unlucky Leo until he was transported to a clinic in Athens. "Leo must be cured and he must survive in retribution to those who wanted to kill him in such a barbaric way", she adds and explains that the animal has been already submitted to a surgical intervention to remove the burned pieces of skin and will shortly be submitted to a second operation to amputate his ears, the tissue of which has become necrotic. According to the veterinarian who has undertaken Leo's treatment, he is no longer in danger health wise and he is very patient and tender with people, despite the cruelty he has ...

Pet shops have been cropping up all over Greece, especially in the last 10 years and of course the majority of them sell puppies. Up until recently, most of the puppies sold in Greek pet shops came from horrible puppy farms in Hungary. Often the pups are taken away from their mothers when just 4-5 weeks old. They are not properly vaccinated, many die before they even reach pet shops or shortly after they are 'put on display' in the windows, usually in glass boxes. As the trend of owning a pedigree dog in Greece grew, it was only a matter of time before somebody decided to set up a 'puppy business'...... Thursday 19/11/2009 About an hour's drive from Athens, the quiet beautiful area of Alepochori hid a very ugly secret.... a hell-hole puppy farm where 58 dogs were found (and subsequently rescued from) a terrible situation. They were malnourished and dehydrated, lying on cold concrete floor, often in their own urine. Apart from dogs, there were several cats, 100 chickens (kept inside a smelly dark shed), a number of rabbits and even some fish and birds. Dogs of many breeds, such as Rottweiler, Boxer, Pitbull, German Shepherd, Cocker Spaniel, Pug, Chihuahua, Pomeranian and Bobtail were imprisoned in these horrible kennels, knowing that the day of their salvation will only be the day of their death. The Greek justice system is now responsible in deciding the outcome of the case and we believe and hope that in a few days time we will know if the confiscation will be permanent ...

Today the municipal workers who empty the rubbish bins found a terribly wounded little fluffy dog thrown ALIVE in a rubbish bin in the area of Agios Panteleimonas of Chania/Crete, Greece. Unfortunately the poor creature had to be put to sleep by a local vet later because the injuries were too bad.
