| Mystras - Greece - UNESCO World Heritage Site. Duration : 101 Seconds Ferries to Greece: ferriesgreece.org Mystras was a fortified town in Morea (the medieval Peloponnese), on Mt. Taygetos, near ancient Sparta. In the 14th and 15th centuries, it served as the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea, experiencing a period of prosperity and cultural flowering. The site remained inhabited throughout the Ottoman period, when it was mistaken by Western travellers for ancient Sparta. It was abandoned in the 1830s, when the new town of Sparti was built, approximately eight kilometres to the east.History In 1249, Mystras became the seat of the Latin Principality of Achaea, established in 1205 after the conquest of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade, and Prince William II Villehardouin, a grand-nephew of the Fourth Crusade historian Geoffrey of Villehardouin, built a palace there. In 1261, the Latins ceded Mystras and other forts in the southeastern Peloponnese as ransom for William II, who had been captured in Pelagonia, and Michael VIII Palaeologus made the city the seat of the new Despotate of the Morea. It remained the capital of the despotate, ruled by relatives of the Byzantine emperor, although the Venetians still controlled the coast and the islands. Mystras and the rest of Morea became relatively prosperous after 1261, compared to the rest of the empire. Under the despot Theodore it became the second most important city in the empire after Constantinople, and William II's palace became the second residence of the emperors. The ... | | Gorgippia - Heritage of Greek culture in Russia. Горгиппия - наследие греческой культуры в России Duration : 581 Seconds This movie was shot on August 2007 during my vacation at the Anapa Black Sea resort. Excavation of the ancient Greek city started in 1965. Reach golden jewelry was found at the site. Now the golden treasures are exposed in the Krasnodar state museum. And the less valuable objects are exposed in the open-air museum "Gorgippia", which is situated at the center of Anapa. I was deeply impressed by 2000 years old glass-ware that looked just like modern glass-ware. The 2000 years old make-up, used by Greek woman, was ready to use! - and some woman archeologists used it with success. A small greek community still exists in Vityazevo, a suburb of Anapa. These Greeks are the descendants of 19-th Century Greek refugees from Turkey's Black Sea Coast. During millions of years the Kuban river has brought with it's waters a huge amount of fine yellow sand. The sand dunes stretch for a dozens of kilometers along the coastline. The history of Anapa is reach. These sand dunes have seen Sinds, Greek, Byzantines, Genoeses, Adygs, Turks, and finally Russian Cossaks, who settled here after 18th Century Russian-Turkish war. | | Nikos Deja Vu - Meteora in Thessaly, Greece (Slideshow © 2011) UNESCO World Heritage Site Duration : 607 Seconds Nikos Deja Vu - Meteora in Thessaly, Greece (Slideshow © 2011) UNESCO World Heritage Site The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα, "suspended rocks", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above") is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The nearest town is Kalambaka. In northwestern Thessaly there rears up out of the plain of the Peneios (Pinios) a group of conglomerate rock formations up to 300m/985ft high which have been weathered by erosion into a variety of bizarre forms. Vertical rock faces, sharply pointed pinnacles and massive crags tower up above Kalambaka and the village of Kastraki, separated by deeply slashed defiles. Perched on these rocks are the monasteries of Meteora, which take their name from their situation - ta meteora monastiria, the monasteries hanging in the air. Originally accessible only by bridle tracks, ladders and windlasses, the monasteries have now been brought within the reach of visitors by the construction of modern roads and flights of steps and by signposting; but it should not be forgotten that these are places of peace and prayer and meditation, and visitors should conduct themselves accordingly. To get the most out of a visit to this awe-inspiring landscape visitors should avoid merely ...
