Great Festivals in May - Fire-Walking in Greece
Duration : 253 Seconds

Where: St. Helen village, Thrace, Northern Greece When: Annually, end of May What's it about: Walking on hot coals in a trance-like state and lots of feasting Remember to Bring: Bacon and eggs (kidding of course!) Anastenaria, an ancient Firewalking Festival performed in Northern Greece, is a religious and sacred ritual that has raised many question marks in modern medical science. Anastenaria, an ancient Firewalking Festival performed in Northern Greece, is a religious and sacred ritual that has raised many question marks in modern medical science. It all started in 1250 when a local Church in the vicinity of Thrace caught fire and people heard the holy figures crying from within. Locals in the village of St. Helen ran into the burning church and saved the figures. The descendants are believed to have the power of dancing on red hot coals without suffering any burns by holding the very same figures held by their forefathers, which is how the event is celebrated up until today. NEMEA 2008 Ancient Greeks Celebrated Festivals(part I)
Duration : 400 Seconds

Nemea and Modern Nemea The ancient Greeks celebrated festivals at Nemea that were part of the cycle of games at Delphi, Isthmia, and (best known today) Olympia. At each of these four sites in rotation, for a brief period each year, wars and hostilities were suspended by a sacred truce, and all Greeks - Spartans and Athenians, Corinthians and Argives, Macedonians and Cretans - gathered in recognition of their common humanity. This impulse toward peace - al¬beit limited to a few days each year - was the first in the history of mankind on an organized, regular, and inter¬national scale. Thus, the ancient festivals at Nemea, Olympia, Delphi, and Isthmia are the direct ancestors of today's Olympic Games as well as of the United Na¬tions. The Society for the Revival of the Nemean Games (which now has more than 2200 members from around the world) was founded in the belief that there is today scope and perhaps even need for the average person - regard¬less of ethnicity, language, religion, gender, age, or ath¬letic ability - to participate in an international athletic festival. And so it happened in the three past Nemeads. More than 1800 people from 45 different countries, ranging in age from 5 to 97, added their footprints to those of ages long ago while more than 10000 spectators looked on. No records were kept and no medals were awarded, families with picnics on the slopes of the stadium were as much a part of the festival as the runners. Races were organized by gender and age ...

The Truth about Halloween and Other Pagan Festivals - Abu Usamah adh Dhahabi
Duration : 3620 Seconds

Are Holidays like Christmas and Easter pagan or Christian? Is Halloween a Pagan Festival? Can Muslims Celebrate Christmas or Valentine day? Where Does Halloween Come from? Halloween has evolved and been influenced by a number of different cultures and religions, the most important of which are paganism, the Romans, the Celts (the people of Ireland, Scotland, Britain, Wales) and Christianity. However, almost all of the traditions surrounding Halloween as we know it today can be traced back to the Celtic Day of the Dead, a pagan holiday. Outspoken and passionate are some of the words that have been used to describe Abu Usaamah At Thahabi. He is the Imam of Green Lane Masjid in Birmingham, UK His passion and love for Islam led him to many parts of the world, delivering lectures, holding seminars and imparting knowledge based on the Islamic tradition according to the understanding of the early generations of the Ummah. He is a skilful translator for scholars visiting the English-speaking world from the Middle East. The Topic: The Truth about Halloween and Other Pagan Festivals A talk by Imam Abu Usamah adh Dhahabi

St George Parathosi Dance Troupe 9b Saturday 5 7 11 Greek Festival
Duration : 438 Seconds

Parothosi senior boys dancing Tsamiko @ St. George Greek Orthodox Church annual Greek Festival on May 7th, 2011 in Bethesda, Maryland Tsamiko The Tsamiko (Greek: Τσάμικος, Tsamikos) is a popular traditional dance of Greece. The name literally means dance of the Chams. It is also known as Kleftikos (Greek: Κλέφτικος), literally meaning dance of the Klephts . The dance The dance follows a strict and slow tempo not emphasising on the steps, but more on the "attitude, style and grace" of the dancer. The dancers hold each other from each other's hands, bent 90 degrees upwards at the elbows. It takes a sturdy hand, especially if you are supporting the first or last person of the line (or circle) who will lean on you to perform high acrobatic leaps (usually kicking his right leg up as he takes off followed by the left (in a scissor-like motion), hitting the latter with the back of his hand before landing). The steps are relatively easy but have to be precise and strictly on beat. The dancer might even stomp his foot in response to a strong beat. There is some improvisation involved and many variations of the steps, depending on which area the dancers come from. Over time the dance has taken on many variations. It is danced in a circle to 3/4 rhythm. In the past, it was danced exclusively by men, but in modern times both men and women take part. Tradition Danced almost exclusively by men, this dance is strongly reminiscent of the 1821 era in Greek history. Today Tsamiko is a ...
