The acerbic-tongue New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong has again done what he is noted of, descending into the gutter on his Madina- based radio station, Oman FM last Friday morning. According to him, he has declared war on all Ewes living in the Ashanti region, and that the NPP activists in the region should attack Ewes with machete and cutlasses. He warned that all security personnel who will try to keep the peace in the region will be lynched. Kennedy Agyapong then latched onto the Security Co-ordinator and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), warning that they should not dare send their men to keep any peace in the Ashanti region. "Today I declare war in this country, Gbevlo-Lartey and his people, IGP should know this. Voltarians in the Ashanti Region will not be spared. If anyone touches you, butcher him with a cutlass...", Kennedy Ohene Agyapong said.

Lauren M. MacLean, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Political Science at Indiana University, discusses the divergent paths of democratization in neighboring Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. Why has Ghana turned over power to the opposition in peaceful, competitive elections while Cote d'Ivoire has been wracked with ethno-regional civil war? Rather than focus on the roles of international mediators and national political elites, she will take us to rural villages in very similar regions on either side of the border for an analysis of everyday politics at the grassroots. Based on eighteen months of survey research and in-depth interviews at the village level, her findings point to the key role of changing informal institutions of reciprocity (that is, the way village residents exchange help with their families, friends and neighbors) in shaping differences in indigenous notions of citizenship and political participation in neighboring Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. This program was made possible by the generosity of Ms. Eloise Briskin and sponored by the Center for Policy Studies at the Case Western Reserve University.

For fourteen years, sporadic civil war overturned life in Liberia. A quarter of a million die, thousands flee the fighting. Many came to Ghana, for them a stable country, a haven. This, just the start of their quest for human security.At the height of the civil war, most of the 42000 refugees here were Liberian. To have lasting security, they needed to find work that can earn them a living. And for that, they needed practical skills. And the key to that: training. Since 2007 the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO, has been helping train refugees, working with its partners FAO and UNHCR. For those refugees who've stayed in Ghana, or gone home to Liberia, becoming self-reliant has transformed their lives. From devastation and conflict, they've found the way ahead to human security and peace.

This clip is an excerpt from the program "Hitler's Heroes: Hanna Reitsch", the female test pilot from the Third Reich who was later invited by Kwame Nkrumah to Ghana to become founder of Ghana's National School Of Gliding. I have posted the part of the program that refers to her post-war exploits. Only a few minutes is devoted to Ghana, but it does contain some excellent clips of Nkrumah & post-independence Ghana, including some excellent images of a parade at Independence Square. Hanna Reitsch was the pilot who flew into encircled Berlin to bring the newly promoted head of the Luftwaffe to meet with Hitler in his bunker, just four days before Hitler committed suicide. After the war, she found herself unwelcome in Europe, and took up an invitation by Nkrumah to found the national gliding school. The pragmatic Nkrumah recognized her brilliance as a pilot, in spite of her links to Nazi Germany, and she lived in Ghana from 1962-1966.
