| Stefan George: Der Siebente Ring Duration : 200 Seconds The German poet Stefan George (1868-1933) was a considerable figure in German poetry in the period from the beginning of last century until the end of the second world war when his name sank very quickly from sight due in no small part to the perceived sympathy between himself and the Nazi party. George's circle used the swastika (which is of course nothing more than a sun symbol of ancient provenance) in its publications before the birth of the Nazis. The Nazis would have liked to have used George's celebrated name as an endorsment of their own beliefs but he on the whole shunned the crasser forms of publicity. For anyone seeking fuller information on George, the recent biography by the American Robert E Norton, 'Stefan George and his Circle' (Cornell University Press, 2002) is invaluable as well as being one of the most interesting biographies I have read for a long time. It was Norton's book which inspired me to write the following poem. George was a great admirer of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II Hohenstaufen (1194-1250) nicknamed stupor mundi (world's wonder). In 1902 George and his disciple Gundolf visited the newly opened imperial crypt in the cathedral at Speyer, the last resting place of (among others) Beatrix the second wife of Frederick Barbarossa the grandfather of Frederick II and thus in a sense the genetrix of the Staufer clan. Later in life George met and befriended the von Stauffenberg brothers, the twins Berthold and Alexander and their brother ... | | LORIOT: German Christmas Poem - "Advent" (English Subtitles) Duration : 173 Seconds Famous Christmas poem by Loriot. Far from being a poet in either German nor English, I still decided to try a translation with rimes/rythm rather than a literal one, because a lyrical form adds to the overall impact I think. So hopefully it worked out like this. Here's the German original: Es blaut die Nacht, die Sternlein blinken Schneeflöcklein leis' herniedersinken. | | *THE REAL SISSI* - Kaiserin Elisabeth von Österreich-Ungarn/Wiener Instrumental Quartett 1910 Duration : 149 Seconds Elisabeth of Bavaria (24 December 1837 Munich/München/D 10 September 1898 Genf/Geneva/CH) was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary as spouse of Francis Joseph I. As such, she held also the titles Queen of Bohemia, Queen of Croatia and others. From an early age, she was called Sisi by family and friends (not "Sissi" like in the film). Elisabeth was born in Munich, Bavaria as Duchess Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie in Bavaria. She was the fourth child of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria and her mother was Princess Ludovika of Bavaria. Her family home was Possenhofen Castle. 1853 Elisabeth accompanied her mother and her 18-year-old sister, Duchess Helene, on a trip to the resort of Bad Ischl, Upper Austria. Her mother hoped Helene would attract the attention of their maternal first cousin, 22-year-old Francis Joseph, then Emperor of Austria. Instead, Francis Joseph chose the 15-year old Elisabeth, and the couple were married a year later in Vienna at St. Augustine's Church on 24 April 1854. While Elisabeth had limited influence on Austro-Hungarian politics, she has become a historical icon. Elisabeth is considered to have been a free spirit who abhorred conventional court protocol and at the same time a tragic figure; she has inspired filmmakers and theatrical producers alike. The Empress wrote poetry (such as the "Nordseelieder" and "Winterlieder", both inspirations from her favorite German poet, Heinrich Heine). Shaping a fantasy in poetry, she referred to herself as Titania ... Tags :Kaiserin Elisabeth, Habsburg, Habsburger, Wittelsbacher, Vienna, Wien, Bavaria, Bayern

| | Schönberg - String Quartet no. 3 (1/4) Duration : 541 Seconds Arnold Schönberg (13 September 1874 - 13 July 1951) String Quartet no. 3, op. 30 1. Moderato Aron Quartett Arnold Schoenberg's third string quartet dates from 1927, after he had worked out the basic principles of his twelve-tone technique. Though the work is serial, he discouraged attempts to follow the transformations of the pitch series aurally. The themes of this work seem to consist mainly of rhythmic patterns rather than pitch, which are reused in variation just as in Classical music (and even though it is not used as thematic material, there is also considerable motivic use of pitch). Indeed, Schoenberg had taken Classical forms as a model for this work. The piece was commissioned by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge on March 2, 1927, though the work had already been completed by this time, and its première was given in Vienna later that year on September 19 by the Kolisch Quartet. Arnold Schönberg was an Austrian and later American composer, associated with the expressionist movement in German poetry and art, and leader of the Second Viennese School. He used the spelling Schönberg until after his move to the United States in 1934 (Steinberg 1995, 463), "in deference to American practice" (Foss 1951, 401), though one writer claims he made the change a year earlier (Ross 2007, 45). Schoenberg was known early in his career for successfully extending the traditionally opposed German Romantic traditions of both Brahms and Wagner, and later and more notably for his pioneering ...
