www.skd.museum February 7,2012 to January 27, 2013 In August 2011, the construction of the Berlin Wall -- symbol of the separation of the two former existing German states -- had its 50th anniversary. As a follow-up to this event, the Galerie Neue Meister shows German-German art from the post-war period until the present on a large scale and primarily from its own holdings. The Albertinum is the ideal place for a show like this, since there the large survey exhibitions on East German art, from which many artworks were acquired for the museum, took place until 1988. The round tour starts with pictures created under the impression of the devastating destruction of the city centre of Dresden in February 1945, which manifest the situation after the "Death of Dresden" (Wilhelm Lachnit) to a new beginning. In separated, but open cabinets of the exhibition's architecture, an exciting and suggestive artistic expression comes to light. While in West Germany next to realistic tendencies, abstraction became the prevailing means of expression, realistic ways of representation dominated in the Eastern part of the divided country. In the years around and after 1989, the pictorial traditions of the former separated states overlapped. They lost their distinct status particularly through the direct encounter with international art trends. The collection of the Galerie Neue Meister has arrived in the present time with works by artists of the younger generation from all parts of Germany ...

Max Ernst (2 April 1891 1 April 1976) was a German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst is considered to be one of the primary pioneers of the Dada movement and Surrealism. After the war, filled with new ideas, Ernst, Jean Arp and social activist Alfred Grünwald, formed the Cologne, Germany Dada group. In 1918 he married the art historian Luise Straus — a stormy relationship that would not last. The couple had a son who was born in 1920, the artist Jimmy Ernst. (Luise died in Auschwitz in 1944.) In 1919 Ernst visited Paul Klee and created paintings, block prints and collages, and experimented with mixed media. In 1922, he joined fellow Dadaists André Breton, Gala, Tristan Tzara, Paul Éluard at the artistic community of Montparnasse.Constantly experimenting, in 1925 he invented a graphic art technique called frottage, which uses pencil rubbings of objects as a source of images. The next year he collaborated with Joan Miró on designs for Sergei Diaghilev. With Miró's help, Ernst pioneered grattage in which he troweled pigment from his canvases. He also explored with the technique of decalcomania which involves pressing paint between two surfaces. Max Ernst's life and career are the subject of Peter Schamoni's 1991 documentary Max Ernst. Dedicated to the art historian Werner Spies, it was assembled from interviews with Ernst, stills of his paintings and sculptures, and the memoirs of his wife Dorothea Tannning and son Jimmy. This week I went to Berlin, Germany so to remember my time there this is a painting I have done in the impressionist style. I used acrylic paints applying it thickly with various brushes in the wet on wet technique. In impressionism the goal is to capture the atmosphere and light over the subject by painting quickly.
