Siegfried Hofreiter owns 20.000 hectares of farmland making him Europe's biggest farmer. Most of that land is in eastern Germany and Lithuania. Hofreiter does 28 million euros of business every year and his company is listed on the stock exchange. He's seeking to diversify into producing biogas but agriculture is a risky business even at the best of times when the world's population is growing and when prosperity in developing countries is driving up demand for food. Our reporter travelled to Lithuania to meet Hofreiter at his third farm.

It's being hailed as a way of bringing calm to hectic city life and sustainably growing food for the table. A new trend is coming to the rooftops of Berlin - for those who haven't the time to head to the countryside to find fresh vegetables, they can now grow their own with a spot of urban farming. A number of the greenhouse-style allotments, in which lettuce and tomatoes grow, are located on the roof of the cultural center known as Malzfabrik, a former malt factory in the south west of the city. The project is still very fresh - only running since June 2011. The center's deputy manager, Nicolas Leschke, says the project offers city-dwellers an alternative way of using free space in the German capital, such as rooftops and abandoned ground. [Nicolas Leschke, Deputy Director of the Malzfabrik]: "We at the Malzfabrik, we have a vast amount of roof space and this roof space could be used for urban farming so the consumer can actually see where the vegetables are produced, how they're produced, they can feel them, touch them, smell them and again the transport costs of course are a lot less. Ludolf von Maltzan is the manager of the"Brodowin Eco-Village"in Brandenburg. The organic farm has 220 cows, and they are much better off than the livestock on most other large dairy farms. Von Maltzan says focusing on the animals'welfare is the key to the business's success.Brodowin has managed to avoid the price-dumping practices of many of the large dairy concerns. MUNICH, Germany (AP) — A German farmer who received the world's first complete double arm transplant said Wednesday that incredulity gave way to joy when he woke from surgery to discover he had arms again. Karl Merk, who lost his arms in a farming accident six years ago, said he at first could not believe that the transplant appeared to have been successful. "It was really overwhelming when I saw that I had arms again," said the 54-year-old, who wore a sleeveless black shirt showing clearly where his new arms had been grafted. "These are my arms, and I'm not giving them away again," he told reporters at the Munich University Clinic where he remains nearly three months after the 15-hour operation. Merk is recovering well and can perform simple tasks such as opening doors and turning lights on and off. His ultimate goals are to eat and dress himself — and ride a motorcycle. "All in all, our wildest expectations have pretty much been fulfilled," said Christoph Hoehnke, one of the lead doctors. A total of 40 surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other support staff carried out the 15-hour operation on July 25-26 to graft the donor's arms on to the body of Merk, who lost his own just below the shoulder in a combine harvester accident. Doctors said there were good indications of nerve growth in the arms but it could take up to two years before he relearns how to use his hands. Small farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa are witnessing both drought and flooding increasingly often, and their harvests are suffering. In Ethiopia, some 80 percent of the population is affected. A German-Israeli project shares know-how and provides technical support aimed at teaching Ethiopian farmers how to farm their land sustainably. With engineers training staff from the farming ministry as well as farmers, the cooperation has already given rise to a number of irrigation plants in four locations.

Every year,the European Union pumps some 6 billion euros into Germany's agricultural sector. But where does it all go?The amount farmers receive depends on how much land they have. Small-scale farmers are amazed to find out how much the big agricultural enterprises cream off from Brussels. Our reporter Kerstin Schweizer travelled to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern,one of the poorest parts of the country,that is also home to Germany's largest agricultural enterprise. The firm receives 3.7 million euros in direct payments from Brussels every year,a figure that astounded even the local mayor. He says he would prefer to promote small and medium-sized businesses that create more jobs.
