On 29th of August, 2008, the prime-minister of Russia, Vladimir Putin, claims in an interview with Matthew Chance, that the Russian army has reported the presence of United States citizens in the combat-zone in Georgia, and has reasons to believe that the US government has orchestrated the conflict between the Georgian Army and the Russian so-called peace-keeping troops in parts of Georgia where Russia still has not retreated according to an agreed schedule the government in Russia has failed to keep. The government in the White House claims Putin's suspicion is ludicrous. Interestingly, the prime-minister, Putin, was in Beijing when the conflict began, and the president, Medvedev, was on a vacation, sailing down the river Volga.

The breakaway republic of South Ossetia has been marking the third anniversary of the war between Georgia and Russia. South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity led the commemorations as around 1000 people gathered in Tskhinvali's central square for a candle-light vigil to remember those who died during the fighting. After months of tension, Georgia's President Mikhail Saakashvili ordered his forces to retake the breakaway region and end the rebellion. A Hollywood drama about the Russia-Georgia war of August 2008 has premiered in the Georgian capital. Cuban-American actor Andy Garcia, who stars as President Mikheil Saakashvili, spoke alongside director Renny Harlin at the premier screening in Tbilisi. As well as dramatizing Saakashvili's role in the events, the film also follows a journalist and cameraman caught in the fighting in South Ossetia.
