The City of Toccoa joined with Amtrak in commemorating the 30th anniversary of the historic Crescent service as part of National Train Day with a special event at the train depot on Alexander Street in Historic Downtown Toccoa. Toccoa Mayor Ron Seib, city officials, and citizens welcomed Amtrak as it made its regular stop in Toccoa on its way to Atlanta and, eventually, New Orleans. The train arrived (as it does every day) in Toccoa at 6:15 am It stops again in Toccoa on its way north at 10 pm AM 630 WNEG Radio broadcasted the event live and gave away a $2000 Amtrak travel voucher.

Memorial Day weekend. Not a whole lot of people because of the slight showers during the day. But it made the experience so much better. I'm going to put up some funny stuff that happened later on, but this is just a collection of the entire day. For those who don't know: The Georgia Renaissance Festival generally includes an abundance of costumed entertainers, musical and theatrical acts, art and handicrafts for sale, and festival food. This festival is set during the reign of Henry VIII, but some include broader definitions of the Renaissance which include earlier periods, such as the Vikings, or later, such as 18th Century pirates. Some engage in deliberate "time travel" by encouraging participants to wear costumes representing several eras in a broad time period. Renaissance fairs encourage visitors to enter into the spirit of things with costumes and audience participation. Most tolerate, and many welcome, fantasy elements such as wizards and elves. The jousting and swordplay on exhibit in most Renaissance fairs is not real combat. As with professional wrestling, these "fights" are often carefully scripted mock combat. The weapons are real, but the participants are skilled, trained actors and stunt performers. Some jousting troupes, however, do perform real lance passes (using real pine lances). "Ren Fair" and "Ren Fest" are popular colloquialisms. Dad decided to go as a pirate, and I went as a mix of an elf and a pirate. LOL.
