Muslims from west Africa gather in a Detroit mosque for pre-Ramadan rituals on Sept. 8, 2007. They are immigrants from Gambia singing religious songs. Metro Detroit has a growing population of Muslims immigrants from Africa. On this night, they spoke in Wolof, Mandinka, Arabic, and English, delivering lectures on Islam and reciting traditional poetry in praise of God as they swayed.

Alieu attended a poetry reading in Senegambia last year and so impressed a couple there that they contacted GambiaRising to encourage us to help him pursue his education. Since Alieu dropped out of school in 8th grade, the public school system required him to re-start his schooling there, and he has been doing so since September 2011. The change in plan he refers to in this video is a program of private studies and private exams that will hopefully accelerate the time before he can be admitted to the university.
