The text is very small, 656 words altogether, but the author made of it an entire book. It is noteworthy that with this text starts the History of Morocco and the Western Coast of Africa down to Sierra Leone, which was the furthermost point reached by the maritime expedition of King Hanno, and described by the Carthaginian royal scribes. Through further epigraphic evidence, we have been able to date King Hanno at the middle of the 5th century BCE. Consequently, the Periplus (circumnavigation) of Hanno consists in the oldest historical reference to Western Africa in the World Literature. The book starts with a Preface about the ancient travelers and navigators; in that part the author describes how people perceived the World in the Antiquity, how they conceived the Earth as flat surface, usually mythologized at its confines, and what meant for the Mediterranean navigators the eventuality of a faraway trip. Raphael Lemkin born on June 24, 1900 was a Polish lawyer of Jewish descent. Before World War II, Lemkin studied the Armenian Genocide in depth and campaigned in the League of Nations to ban what he called "barbarity" and "vandalism". He is best known for his work against genocide, a word he coined in 1943 from the root words genos (Greek for family, tribe or race) and -cide (Latin for killing). He first used the word in print in Axis Rule in Occupied Europe: Laws of Occupation - Analysis of Government - Proposals for Redress (1944). Lemkin was born Rafał Lemkin in the village of Bezwodne in Imperial Russia, now the Vawkavysk district of Belarus. Not much is known of Lemkin's early life. He grew up in a Jewish family and was one of three children born to Joseph and Bella (Pomerantz) Lemkin. His father was a farmer and his mother a highly intellectual woman who was a painter, linguist, and philosophy student with a large collection of books on literature and history. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been a presence in Africa since 1853, but for the first 125 years it was established only in southern Africa. Applications by the Church for admittance into central Africa in the 1960s were denied, but those in 1978 were approved, and growth of the Church there has been impressive. From 1853 until 1978 most of the work of the Church in Africa was with European immigrants and their descendants in South Africa and in Northern and Southern Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe, respectively). In June 1978, when the First Presidency announced the revelation extending the priesthood to all worthy male members of the Church, the way was opened for the Church to extend its full program to all the nations of Africa. Missionaries were sent to Nigeria and Ghana at the request of many local people who had already studied the Church scriptures and literature and had organized themselves into units that they unofficially called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church missions were later organized in Zaire, Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Ivory Coast, and Mauritius and Reunion islands. With his lavish spending and generosity in Cairo and Mecca, he ran out of money and had to borrow at usurious rates of interest for the return trip. Al-Umari also states that Mansa Musa and his retinue "gave out so much gold that they depressed its value in Egypt and caused its value to fall." However, attention should be focused on the effects of the hajj, rather than the pilgrimage itself. The hajj planted Mali in men's minds and its riches fired up the imagination as El Dorado did later. Mansa Musa brought back with him an Arabic library, religious scholars, and most importantly the Muslim architect al-Sahili, who built the great mosques at Gao and Timbuktu and a royal palace. Mansa Musa strengthened Islam and promoted education, trade, and commerce in Mali.
