The downtown Essen pet-shop has two Gambian Pouch Rats for sale for 200 euro each, and they just had a litter two weeks ago. I finally got around to taking my camera in and they allowed me to take a lot of pictures and video. They're pretty gorgeous animals. The squeaking babies here are almost the size of my full-grown rats; the parents are like small cats. They can weigh up to four kilos! The name isn't because they're marsupials, but because they have cheek-pouches for carrying food. They're actually not technically true rats. The rats are used to sniff out mines: they're more convenient to transport and feed than dogs, are less likely to set off a mine with their weight, and have as great personality and intelligence (they actually train faster than dogs). They bring up an interesting debate about the keeping of exotic animals. The animal rights crowd points out that they're taken from their natural environment and kept in cages and that, if improperly taken care of, they can severely damage native plants and animals. Imported giant rats, including a population in Florida, are blamed for bringing monkeypox to the US. On the other hand, many common pets, like parakeets, tortoises, and fish are technically kept out of their native habitats, to say nothing of the fact that every domesticated and "acceptable" pet started off as a wild animal. If ANYONE in the US still has them, I am VERY interested in two young pouched rats! Either Emin's pouched OR Gambian pouched! THANK YOU!!! Matisse is an emin's pouched rat, they are RELATED to gambian pouched rats, but are seperate species. He is 4 years old as of 6/07, NOT neutered (vet turned me down back when I got him), and EXTREMELY affectionate. That said, not everyone can or should handle an african pouched rat. They are not domestic animals and do not act like it, either. EDIT- Matisse was an emin's pouched rat (Crycetomis emini), a smaller, sleeker relative of the gambian pouched rat (Crycetomis gambianus). The emin's pouched rat has a longer snout, it's fur is very sleek and body is thin and longer. They have a clear line of demarkation from it's dark brown upper body and it's greyish white belly. The gambian rat has a short snout, a bulkier body, is a uniform greyish color, and a bit "rougher" looking fur. My emin's pouched rat weighed about 4 lbs. at his peak, was SOLID muscle, made lots of "churbling" noises (almost like a parrot) and was very playful outside his cage. He was extremely intelligent, scarily so, and figured things out instantly. He was also VERY stubborn, and if he didn't want to do something, there was no way you could make him. This was our second full-length documentary - following on from `Lair of the Red Worm`. It tells the story of our 2006 expedition to the West African country of The Gambia in search of a dragon-like creature known as Ninki-Nanka, and the mysterious Beast of Bungalow Beach. At the time we released it on GoogleVideo, because YouTube were unable to take something as big as this. About 4000 people saw it the first time round, but I am overjoyed that it has now joined the rest of our films here on CFZtv via YouTube.

Oxpeckers are closely associated with grazing animals in Africa, and in the absence of other large grazing animals in The Gambia, they are closely associated with cattle. Oxpeckers in The Gambia have an ambiguous relationship with cattle. While they feed on flies and external parasites, they also will feed on wounds and deepen them, delaying healing. They are very well adapted to their hosts, and very adept at avoiuding attempts by cattle to remove them....
